This is an open call for an artistic participation in a performance development project addressed to every human being. For my master degree in fashion design at UdK Berlin (Universität der Künste Berlin - University of the Arts Berlin) I'm looking for people who want to be part of a performance as well as short video (video should be the end result, showing the performance and the whole project). Therefore I'm looking for choreographers, dancers and filmmakers who would love to develop the performance and video.
Project: habitus. habitat.
We are in this together and without each other we couldn‘t stay alive. We all know that we are living in a globalized, heterogeneous world, in which cultures and societies get together increasingly. This co-existing isn’t always easy and from my point of view some people still build borders around themselves, while excluding other people.
Having that base I started to question our society, our habits and our habitat. I was looking for solutions that would destroy the boundaries of life, that would fight the black-and-white thinking.
How to reach equality, security and safety within our society?
When not feeling safe we are much better in rising walls around ourselves, we won’t look after somebodies interests and we often forget that we depend on each other. That’s why I first tried to get to know more about our urge for security and comfy. We feel safe when covered. Whatever our skin color are, to fit in the society we have to accept its norms. Norms come in the form of clothing styles as well. But also Garments and buildings form additional human covers. Both are related to each other, we inhabit and design them. We define the fabric that is wrapped around our body and the solid structure of our dwellings. They are unstable and yet they are vital elements of our life and our culture. They fulfill analogous human needs. Offering protection from the cold and heat, covering us and giving us a feeling of comfy and security.
Existential we depend on them. Our habitations offer a temporary retreat from the world as protection zones, but paradoxically, the security of such an individual sphere is only guaranteed through external contacts and social unions.
And in terms of cultural anthropology, humans aren’t lonely „monads“ in the Leibnizian sense, but rather social beings. So we won’t find protection, safety and security realized in the outside. Our longing for comfy and security is only satisfied when “moving closer together”. Thus creating personal warmth does not only result in physical, but above all emotional warmth. An additional shell is created, a further dimension to protect. We create safety nets through spinning its structure by social alliances.
Concept and Design.
Knowing that each individual keeps an eye on, and protects, the other. That one‘s individual life depends on the life of the other, I decided to create covers which offer the opportunity to be more than just a shell and temporary retreat. Through combining the facts that we are addicted to each other as well as on our various shells I want to create a safe-space.
This safe-space will be created by linking or bonding together. Through connections I will build a unit that is growing by participation. A unit and space where people get together to protect each other. In this case, symbolic content is more important than functional. The connecting elements are direct embodiments of the idea of social link. The physical link is going to weave the social link and the collective use creates a kind of heating in a metaphorical meaning…
To visualize my idea of belonging and being together, being united I decided to use one color only.
As white is created by a mixture of different colors it’s going to be all white. White is associated with peace and passive resistance. The white ribbon is worn by movements denouncing violence against women (e.g. Suffragettes). The White Rose was a non-violent resistance group in Nazi Germany. Gandhi wore a white piece of fabric and today women wore white during Trumps „State of the Union“. White stands out especially out of the black serious suits. It is calm but at the same time visual expressive. It’s a powerful sign when united. I would like to mention Lygia Papes artwork „Divisor - Divider“ here. People get together under a huge piece of white fabric. From above and far away it’s an impressive structure. We see heads and the fabric only. What we can’t see at first sight is the situation underneath the textile. The artwork becomes a social structure. Through having the social and spiritual impact, Lygia Pape destroys boundaries. Another inspiration for using white I got from the emergency shelters/tents. These tents protect, they offer security. Also, in emergency shelters people HAVE TO or NEED TO coexist and be one, a united society. An additional reference why I decided to have it all white is the so called „white noise“. I like the fact that this noise calms us down. It not only calms us down but helps us to blind out other annoying noise. White noise helps us to recover, it protects us and offers a silent (safe) space. To show the importance of being connected in my project I decided to make the connections visible, by using the opposite color black. Black in this case is the most neutral and anonymous color, without evoking associations. Using black and white also leads me back to my starting point denouncing black-and-white-thinking.
I'm the fashion designer who creates the clothes and I do not know much about the development of a performance. I got a few ideas but don't know how to realize them. Together with you I wish to talk and develop a performance as a collective. To collect ideas and to realize them.
Feel free to contact me. I'm looking forward to meet you for a talk and a coffee!
