These are calls for people who make exhibitions rather than the work in them: exhibitions to programme, curatorial residencies, research posts, commissioning briefs and open calls for proposals from independent curators.
The distinction matters because the application is different. Where an artist submits a portfolio, a curator usually submits a proposal, an argument for a show, a reading of a collection, or a line of research, alongside evidence of past projects.
A proposal is judged on the idea and on whether you can deliver it in the context offered. Panels read for a clear thesis, a plausible list of artists or works, and an understanding of the space, budget and audience you would be working with.
Specificity about the host matters as much as it does for residencies. A proposal that could be realised anywhere reads as weaker than one responding to this institution, its collection, its city or its programme.
