This painting is informed by grief and explores the coexistence of two parallel realms: lived reality and an imagined, dreamlike landscape. Reality is rendered as two confined and limited spaces, in contrast to the imagined realm, which unfolds as vast and tranquil. One space embodies the ever-present feeling of loss, while the other takes the form of a hand-stitched grid that references the often invisible yet continuous labor, care, and emotional endurance involved in accompanying a loved one at the end of their life.

A geometrical abstract composition featuring looping lines intertwined in motion, as if held together by an unseen force. Created using the traditional embroidery technique from 16th century Arraiolos, Portugal, this work showcases the intricate wool embroidering on burlap, combining dynamic movement with centuries-old craftsmanship.

Looping Line II

This piece explores my recurring motif of the red looping line, set within a composition that intentionally conceals it in part. By partially obscuring the line, the work encourages viewers to engage more deeply and invite their own interpretations.

Looping Line III

This work was inspired by the grief I experienced after the loss of my dog, Spree. Grief is a complex emotion, beginning as sharp, overwhelming pain and evolving into unexpected forms over time. Confronted with the idea of a beloved soul’s complete absence, I imagine Spree inhabiting a dreamlike space—close enough to sense his presence, yet unreachable. This painting explores the juxtaposition of two dimensions: the tangible reality and this imagined realm. In this space, he wanders in tranquility, free from suffering, while our eventual reunion remains a distant, hopeful possibility.

Grieving

I called this piece “Comfy Chaos” because it depicts an alternate universe that seems chaotic but is ultimately embroidered in perfect order.

Comfy Chaos

This painting was inspired by a heartbreaking news image: a father in Gaza, frantically driving his infant daughter to the hospital in a desperate attempt to save her life. Despite his efforts, she could not be saved. The moment stayed with me and found its way into this work.

It presents a geometric abstraction focused on a singular, ambiguous form, inviting multiple interpretations. Drawing inspiration from the aesthetics and principles of the modernist art and design movement, the piece explores how our perception of beauty shapes emotional connections with visual artifacts.

It centers on an unidentified form that, while seemingly ordinary on the surface, holds a world of meaning beneath. The piece reflects on how an object can appear simple outwardly but carry deep emotional significance for someone.

 The Meaning of an Artifact I

This composition was an exploration of movement and balance using only basic geometric shapes and color. I approached it as a study in how simple forms can interact to create rhythm and structure within a defined space. After finishing the piece, I couldn’t help but see the shape of a lighter and a flame emerging from the forms. That moment of recognition inspired the title, Isqueiro (which means “lighter” in Portuguese). As with much of my work, the meaning wasn’t fully clear at the beginning. It revealed itself gradually, reminding me how abstract compositions can still evoke familiar, even playful, associations.

This artwork draws inspiration from basic geometric forms and their foundational role in the modernist art and design movement. At the heart of the piece is a playful, looping red line, a recurring motif in my work. It is an abstract element, purposefully drawn to introduce a sense of movement and fluidity within a precise, grid-like structure. While open to interpretation, I hope it evokes a feeling of joy and freedom in those who view it. As the line passes through the vase at the center, it shifts in color. This is a reference to how perspective can influence perception. What we see often changes depending on context. I chose acrylic paint for this piece because of the fluidity it allows.

Vaso

This is my debut painting presented to the public. The looping red line, a recurring motif in my work, represents energy, emotion, and motion. It flows freely across a precise grid of geometric squares, creating a contrast between spontaneity and control.
