“Sticky Notes” is part of my series “Syncope”.

Syncope (the medical term for “fainting” or “passing out”) explores the feeling of “being disoriented” and puts it into the context of our modern everyday life: Again and again, we lose track of what is happening around us – and when we concentrate the most, we often find ourselves thinking nothing at all. This metaphorical temporary loss of consciousness has become a daily companion for many people in our fast-paced society. Are we still able to focus in a world so full of stimuli? And how do we deal with it in the long run?

I drew my inspiration for the series from the people all around us – interpreting their behaviour and feelings in my own way. What I often see is how these people – for short moments of time – appear lost within their own thoughts. This is how the title “Syncope” finally came to life. 

“Sticky Notes” is one of the first images of the series – trying to show exactly this feeling of being overwhelmed by thoughts, responsibilities and notifications in a very literal way.

My series “Cubes (Part II)” deals with the phenomenon that every now and then, a lot of people experience a sense of “disconnect” about life. Being isolated can be a forced situation – or a voluntary decision. From time to time, we all feel like lost souls within their own small cubes – even though our thoughts, moments and lives are connected to one another, in every second. When are we going to realise?

After the completion of “Cubes (Part I)” – I continued the series with its second episode. Part II also consists of nine (interconnected) rooms which are, this time, strongly characterized by their reference to famous architectural eras of mankind. The series juxtaposes human history with our contemporary world and stresses the interdependence of the “individual”.

“Renaissance Cube” is deeply inspired by the famous Renaissance artists Donato Bramante and Sandro Botticelli.

From time to time, we all feel like lost souls within their own small cubes – even though our thoughts, moments and lives are connected to one another, in every second. When are we going to realise?

“Gothic Cube” is inspired by the most beautiful Gothic cathedrals of the world – and especially by Notre-Dame de Paris and the dramatic fire of 2019.

“Romanesque Cube” is deeply inspired by the beautiful and largest Romanesque crypt in the world – the crypt of the Speyer Cathedral in Germany.

With “Roses” I wanted to express that the most obvious and often most important or precious things for us are sometimes right in front of us and, at the same time, missed by us because of so many things that cross our minds day in and day out.

“Cards” was created in 2021 after more than three years of preplanning and searching for an ideal setting for the scenery. The set design, mainly consisting of 12,000 playing cards, literally plays with the image of many human relationships and their often underlying emotional void.

With the image “Trees”, I not only added one of the last images in 2021 to the series, but also highlight one the main themes of my artistic work: Being in an “in-between state of mind” (like searching and finding, being awake and dreaming, lost in thought and yet totally focused).

“Noodles” was created in 2019 in a kind of “basement kitchen” of my parent’s house where I had the idea of telling this dreamlike and melancholic romance of a woman absent-mindedly waiting for her partner who is, apparently, not going to come.
