This work is part of a photographic project called "Anthroposphere". The project aims to describe the state of the art of the anthropized territory through an abstract and surreal vision. In these images, obtained by overlapping my photographs of modern and contemporary architecture, I'm trying to depict the caos of the contemporary mankind's sphere of life through the built environment as in the definition of junk-space by the architect Rem Koolhaas : " if space-junk is the human debris that litters the universe, junk-space is the residue mankind leaves on the planet. An abstract perception of architecture as an important component of anthropization. Buildings that symbolize the greed of humanity and the frailties of modernization are the subjects I like to focus on in my works.

This painting belongs to my new body of work entitled "Masks". The interest in masks in the history of man comes from my personal reflection on the increasingly widespread loss of individuality for the benefit of personal identity: “E. Fromm described modern man as an individual with two faces: on the one hand independent, self-sufficient and critical, on the other isolated and fearful. The feeling of isolation and helplessness is frightening and normal people dilute it in the daily routine, in economic success, in worldly distractions while the so-called neurotics transcend it in art, in writing, in music. Having to face God (or the Market) alone, man seeks salvation in a new submission. According to Goffman we therefore live in a world of representations in which everyone (without exception) plays a part (or parts) adapting to the culture of his world and his time. Modernity has introduced into culture a way (a power) to silence the doubts and anxiety of the modern individual."

This painting belongs to my new series of works entitled "Masks". Having to face God (or the Market) alone, man seeks salvation in a new submission. We have pointed out the economic conditions which in our time favor the growing isolation and growing helplessness of the individual; examining the psychological results we have shown that this impotence leads either to the type of flight that we find in the authoritarian character, or to an obsessive conformism in the course of which the individual becomes an automaton, loses his individuality and yet at the same time at the level of consciousness he imagines himself free and subject only to himself "  “According to Goffman we therefore live in a world of representations in which everyone (without exception) plays a part (or parts) adapting to the culture of his world and his time. Modernity has introduced into culture a way (a power) to silence the doubts and anxiety of the modern individual. This power has been interpreted by the global market that has imposed the masks suggested by the market economy: lifestyles and behavior that are expressed in clothes, cars, homes, travel and a whole series of technological fetishes (smartphones, smartwatches, etc. ) that allow you to "conform" to your company to the detriment of your individuality. "  This ongoing series is dedicated to the great artist, brilliant humorous designer, Saul Steinberg.

Solipsism is the philosophical attitude according to which the thinking subject cannot affirm that his own individual existence insofar as every other reality is resolved in his thought. Radical solipsism preaches that everything I can know about the world is inside my head. For the subject, all that he can know about an external object is the sensation that this object gives him and the mental image that derives from it: from the sensations ideas will be generated and from the ideas images will be produced. According to Descartes we cannot know with certainty, if we rely only on the senses, that external reality really exists. So the idea of ​​solipsism is that we cannot prove that external things exist and that consequently the only reality we can claim to know is that of our ideas. According to J. Locke, however, if our sensations are passive, that is, we receive them from the outside and therefore we are not creating them with our mind, it means that necessarily there must be something outside that is giving me those sensations. The concordance between subjects who see the same object, albeit with slight differences, could prove the existence of external matter. There are elements of quantum physics that we cannot see due to Heisenberg's uncertainty principle: if I were the inventor of everything I perceive, it would be difficult to explain the unpredictability of observing quantum physics. This would be enough to undermine solipsism, even if on a philosophical level it would continue to be very difficult to prove that the external world exists. Having the eyes of the philosopher, therefore, means seeing things outside the prejudices that society imposes on us, to see how much complicated beauty there is under the alleged simplicity of this world. As expressed by a good part of Eastern mysticism, the truth can only reside within us and never outside. Solipsism, in its most positive sense, gives us new eyes, those of the solitary being, useful for looking for the hidden (often lost) treasures within us.

Basically, I translate into images those traces of the obstinate noisy stream of everyday life that tenaciously prevents silence from visiting me, and, when it happens, I translate the silence itself into images.

It happened to be in Berlin in March 1990. The demolition process of the wall was still in progress. I was in an area where the wall was still intact and two DDR’s soldiers were removing the barbed wire from the top of the wall. I asked to one of them if it was possible to have a piece of it and the soldier replied: yes, if you give me five German Marks. After more then 30 years I found that tiny piece of barbed wire among my things and I used it to make this tiny installation/mausoleum, built with an old glass bell and a piece of marble removed from a 1940s bedside table.

Once Upon a Time In Berlin

This work is part of an ongoing project called "all walks of life". The aim of the project is to create sculptures / installations from waste materials that express, in an ironic way, people from all walks of life. The main use of waste material in the creation of these sculptures wants to convey the disposable lifestyle in which we live, at its peak, and to represent, in an artistic vision, those of us who contribute recklessly to the construction of a path towards a dystopian future of the human race.

Investigating the feeling of powerlessness in the face of the impermanence of things; it is the recognition in death of the defeat of all our earthly endeavors.  It is a warning to the ephemeral condition of existence, in synthesis expressed by the historical sentence “memento mori”.
