Overview

The Emmanuel College Art Department offers a six-week artist residency to four artists each summer. The residency supports a diverse group of artists, providing uninterrupted time and space for established and emerging artists to develop their work.

The Art Department specifically aims to award a residency to one individual from each of the four categories: ceramics, photography, printmaking, and social practice. We strive to foster a supportive environment, so artists have the opportunity to achieve their creative and artistic goals. The residency also plays an important role in advancing the visual arts on the Emmanuel campus, making contemporary art accessible to students, staff, and faculty.

An Art Department studio manager will be available throughout the residency to assist artists with the logistics of the residency.  In return, artists contribute to the Emmanuel community through occasional interactions with Emmanuel faculty, staff, and students, and through the single work that each artist donates to Emmanuel College at the completion of their residency.  Occasional opportunities for community building with the Emmanuel community may be organized by the Art Department.

Residency Specifications:

  • Artists must not be currently enrolled in any academic program

  • Residency is from June 16th – July 28th, 2027

  • Artists will receive a stipend of $1500 dollars

  • International artists may be eligible for up to an additional $1000 to be used to cover travel and visa costs.

  • International Artists must obtain a visa to participate. Conversational proficiency of the English language is required.

  • Lodging is provided, for the individual artist only, in the college dormitories, which include access to a small kitchen. The dorms may be located up to a 25-minute walk from the main campus, where the studios are located. Artists are responsible for arranging and covering their own transportation costs, if any, between the lodging and studio locations.

  • Artists may be invited back for a presentation during the following academic year based on teaching needs.

  • Residents have access to communal college studio facilities with ample space sharing - ceramics, wood shop, print shop, photo studio, darkroom, design lab and drawing studios.

  • Emmanuel will host an on-campus closing exhibition for all resident artists to participate in, and show the larger community the end result of your work.

  • Artists will donate one piece to Emmanuel College at the end of the residency.

  • Artists are responsible for all material, food, shipping, and transportation costs during the residency.

  • Residency is awarded to individual artists only – partners and spouses are not included.

  • Artists must be on-site for the duration of the program.

  • The 2027 summer application is due December 18th, 2026 11:59PM EST.

Note: Due to the summer months being relatively quiet in that faculty and students are generally not on campus, networking that extends beyond the campus to the larger art community of Boston is not offered by Emmanuel College.  We encourage artists to do their own community building by organizing weekly dinners or other social events together and reaching out to any Boston-based arts organizations that are of interest to them.
