“AESTHETICS OF POWER”
The art work consists of paintings on canvas and walls, inspired by the aesthetic of barrier tape. It is made of read/white and black/yellow spray paint and collages, made of barrier tape. During MG #5 I want to present the paintings on canvas as well as the space around them, which is arranged by spray cans and the collages.

CONCEPT
The colours read/white and black/yellow are ubiquitous in every city. They signalize orders like “STOP“ or „DO NOT CROSS THIS LINE“. They also constitute a border between a legal space and an illegal space and represent covered hierarchies in urban space, which can be received as an “aesthetic of authority“.
Referring to the issue “Unfamiliar“, the barrier tapes often seem to me like foreign objects inside the city. They regularly create awkward situations, which make ourselves  feel like a foreign body. By presenting the material in a new context, the barrier tapes lose their original meaning and open up to a new perspective.

The series »Restricted area« is a photographic documentation of paintings and their process of creation on the walls of an abandoned barracks site. It comprises about a hundred photographs. The series was also used to create a stop-motion-film that vividly represents the painting process. Not only the paintings itself, but also the camera perspective, natural light changes and the movements of the painter play an important role in designing the barracks. All these factors extend the static picture by adding a temporal level. A synthesis of painting, architecture, time, movement and light is thus created.

Sperrgebiet / Restricted Area

First test for a upcoming series of interventions in public space. Summer 2014.

The series will consist of several stop-motion-video works, documenting the making of temporary drawings realized with chalk spray. The drawing should visualize a site specific character of a certain urban space, catching and translating the atmosphere, a unique structure or historical context of selected places in Berlin.
