Suburban Giants is a collaboration between Lachlan Tetlow-Stuart and visual artist Jo Kerlogue. The work repurposes the Nintendo Wii controller in order to create a large scale interactive digital canvas.

The result is an interactive projection work that builds on Graffiti Research Lab’s Laser Tag, adding significantly more functionality and control potential to large-scale urban projection. Utilising Adobe Flash and open source Wii hacks, Suburban Giants facilitates the ability to both digitally draw on large-scale surfaces and  physically manipulate giant ‘digital puppets’. These ‘puppets’ can also be visually manipulated in a scrap-book-collage style, mixing and matching body parts.

The work was initially commissioned for Adelaide’s Feast Festival 2008 and toured to a variety of city council’s across the festival, traveling on the back of a custom built projector bike provided byCarclew Youth Arts.

Since it’s initial presentation season, it has been presented at the 2009 Electrofringe Festival in Newcastle as part of the This Is Not Art Festival and the South Australia Living Artist Festival in Adelaide.

Commissioned for the Next Wave Festival’s Next Wave Time Lapseprogram at Federation Square, Melbourne, A Someone Else’s Problem Field is essentially fiction disguised as reality: augmented reality. It is a simple sleight-of-hand act that invokes the wonder and curiosity of childhood to re-imagine what the world is, and could be.

The work takes Federation Square as its subject, and, through the use of the Square’s live camera, morphs and warps the space’s surrounding buildings. It is, as Lachlan himself describes, a work based on childhood fantasy and the extremes of imagination:

Within my public media arts practice I’m particularly interested in stimulating the imagination of people in order to rediscover their urban environments. Through doing this, I also look to facilitate collective communal experiences that exist outside conventional arts spaces. In the tradition of many digital and non-digital public intervention artists, A Someone Else’s Problem Field is simply an illusionist magic trick that only exists as an artwork through the experience of its audience.

Premiering as the first interactive work on Adelaide’s giant public pixel display: the Rundle Lantern, ‘Call Me’ invites audience members to use their mobile phones to manipulate the towering display with the distinct qualities of their own voice. Dialling the Lantern’s number opens an audio link within which audience members are able to gurgle, sing and shout to create myriads of kaleidoscopic artworks upon the 70 foot tall light display.

The work premiered from July 31 – August 22, 2010 at various times from sunset to midnight during the South Australian Living Artist Festival.

The work was supported by both SALA Festival and the Adelaide City Council.

Call Me

Presented as part of the Regional Arts Australia National Conference, If There Was A Colour Darker Than Black I’d Wear It is an immersive performance installation that takes an audience through a rural township on the search for young man as he searches for his own identity. Audience members taken on a journey, through the use of a media enabled bus, to five installations throughout the township, engaging with a non linear narrative through interactive media, performance and installation.

If There Was A Colour Darker Than Black I'd Wear It

Born during the hybrid arts lab: Time Place Space 6 and premiering at Melbourne’s Next Wave Festival in 2010, The Short Message Service is an investigation into a participatory form of performance that creates a charged power relationship between its audience and performers; investigating power and complicity in 21st century culture. The work parallels a number of infamous mid-twentieth century psychology experiments that occurred in response to both the atrocities of WWII and the assassination of Martin Luther King; including Stanley Milgram’s Milgram Experiment, Zimbardo’s Stanford Prison Experiment and Jane Elliott’s Blue-eyed/Brown-eyed.

The performance guides audience members through the use of screen-based provocations. Audience SMS text, physical actions and directions which are enacted and spoken by two performers. Two visible technicians receive the text messages and relaying them to the performers through wireless audio communication.
