“Room of thoughts” – a participative installation by Kathrin Ollroge in public space

Since September 2014 the traveling living room “Room of thoughts” has been inviting people to gather in public spaces in Eastern Germany to exchange thoughts and experiences about escape, asylum and community. The visual artist Kathrin Ollroge is collecting the culminating impressions through writings and portraits. In june 2016 the traveling living room will stop at the faculty of law at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, to collect opinions and proposals around judicial issues and asylum from students and visitors. In addition students and visitors will also be asked to take portraits. The results will be published at a later date.

A project by Kathrin Ollroge, curated by Katia Hermann with the kind support of the Faculty of law of Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and honorable donors.

In the multimedia installation DREAMSTATE, the Hungarian-American artist George Peck refers to the judicial and peaceful transition from an authoritarian government to a democratic one that began in Hungary 1989-90, a pivotal year internationally. The installation shows archival images and video, as well as documentation of contemporary events in multilayered projections and gives visitors the opportunity to listen to the eyewitness accounts of the former Chief of the Hungarian Supreme Court, the Honorable Dr. Pál Solt. Informed by a painter’s sensibility, the artist creates in DREAMSTATE a composition which reminds one of the structure of dreams.

In light of the actual situation in his country of birth, George Peck feels the importance of recalling these historically significant moments of 1989-90.Transgressing the spatial-historical context, DREAMSTATE stands as a universal symbol for the peaceful transition and protection of democracy and constitutional legality. This in a world coined by riots and change, like in the Arab world for example, while experiencing rollbacks in democratic states led by autocrats, like in Hungary, the Czech Republic, Romania, Turkey or Russia.

The panel discussion will address the process of democratization in Hungary and the following questions concerning the historical events of 1989-90: How did this peaceful transition fulfil the hopes and aspirations of the Hungarian people, and where does Hungary stand more than twenty years later? What does democratization mean, not only politically but intellectually, psychologically, culturally, and economically? How does this bloodless revolution stand as precedence for other countries in reformation? In conclusion, and making a link to the exhibition: At times when radical change is taking place, what is the artist’s role in short-term politics?

The participants are: Prof. Lutz Götze (member of the PEN-Zentrum Germany), Sergey Lagodinsky (Head of EU/ North America Department, Heinrich Böll Stiftung), Attila Mong (journalist), Clemens Schöll (Director of the exchange program for journalists in Central and Eastern Europe „Medien – Mittler zwischen den Völkern“), Ágnes Szabó (independent journalist), Adele Eisenstein (independent curator) and the artist George Peck. Moderated by Dr. Susanne Stemmler (visiting professor at the UdK, Berlin).

Influenced by cultural, social and political changes, remembrance, commemoration and forgetting are ongoing processes that accompany the construction and re-interpretation of personal and national identity. Lots of facets and questions exist about memory - one of the biggest mysteries of human brain studied in many different disciplines like in neurobiology, psychology or philosophy.
Artists rely on their memory for creation, they get inspired form their memories, reconstruct, imagine memorials or create surfaces for projection of the memory. Going back to our memories is a mental time travel and an important link between past and present.
The exhibition here and now… amnesia at Savvy Contemporary is an invitation to discover “memory-traces” of five artists from Western and non-Western countries living in Berlin, aiming to coin a “here and now” with their art works especially created for the show. A residency at Savvy Contemporary is offered to them for a couple of weeks to create pieces in permanent dialogue with one another and with the curator, as well as develop a scenography for the multidisciplinary group show that will approach different facets of memory or the complete or partial loss of it, amnesia.

Während des Festivals Translating Hip Hop wird zum ersten Mal in Deutschland eine umfassende Auswahl der Arbeiten des Hip Hop-Fotografen der ersten Stunde Joe Conzo präsentiert. Die Fotoinstallation Born in the Bronx bringt den Besucher hautnah heran an Künstler, Orte, Performances und Style – in Gegenüberstellung, damals und heute. Gezeigt werden Arbeiten aus den Jahren 1977 bis 1982 sowie aktuelle Fotografien.
Die Installation besteht aus einer achtminütigen, auf zwei Leinwänden synchronisierten Fotoprojektion. Sie zeigt Straßenszenen der Bronx, Tanzszenen und Konzertauftritte, Gruppenfotos und Aufnahmen von den Cold Crush Brothers und Legenden wie Afrika Bambaataa, Kool Herc, Run DMC, Busy Bee und The Treacherous Three.
Conzos Aufnahmen dokumentieren Hip Hop-Geschichte – von der bekannten battle der Cold Crush Brothers mit den Fantastic Romantic Five im Harlem World 1981 bis zu den Proben des legendären Films „Wild Style“ (1982).
Die aktuellen Fotografien von Joe Conzo zeigen die „Tools of War True School NYC Summer Park Jams“ 2010 und 2011 mit u.a. DJ Grand Wizard Theodor (Erfinder des Scratch), Afrika Bambaataa, DJ Jazzy Jay, Large Professor, Grandmaster Caz, DJ Red Alert und Partygästen wie „Wild Style“- Regisseur Charlie Ahearn. Darüber hinaus sind Aufnahmen von Bboys (Breakdancern) und aktuellen Graffitis von der Tats Cru aus der Bronx und der Hall of Fame in Manhattan zu sehen.
Die Bilder Conzos spannen den Bogen zurück zu den Anfängen der Hip Hop-Kultur in der Bronx, auf die sich MCs in aller Welt immer noch beziehen.

Die Fotoinstallation wird kuratiert von Katia Hermann und unterstützt von der Botschaft der Vereinigten Staaten.

On the occasion of the international premiere of the Egyptian documentary feature ALTHAWRA… KHABAR (Reporting…A Revolution) by Bassam Mortada (Berlinale Special, 2012), Al-Masry Media Group is presenting a photo exhibition with about 60 photographs by 16 young Egyptian
photographers working for the independent daily newspaper Al-Masry Al-Youm (http://www.egyptindependent.com/), Cairo, Egypt,
documenting the events in 2011 and the time
after.
ALTHAWRA… KHABAR (Reporting…A Revolution) is a film about six journalists from Egypt reporting from the heart of their countries revolution. It’s an 18 days biography of a nation and six reporters.
Because the protest continues Al-Masry Al-Youm wishes to publish the works of reporters and photographers who continued to report to the
public. The exhibition “Reporting...a revolution (continued)” presents the work of 16 photographers and video reports of journalists who continue to report on the revolution. Photos shot the 25th of January this
year complete and update this exhibition.
