The idea of being gluttonous revolves around the concept of overconsumption. I wanted to portray something other than the over-exhausted representation of food. I feel like gluttony is much more than simply over-eating. Needing an excess of something drives someone into insanity, because your mind convinces you that you can no longer live without it.

In “GULA”, I did not want to show one specific object that the subject is consuming. In the bowl pictured on the table, the glowing substance is meant to represent whatever the viewers form of gluttonous behaviour is. Drugs, jewels, drinks; whatever drives you to obsession and gives you tunnel vision.

 As THE POSSESSION is final piece of the series, I wanted to touch on a subject that is often overlooked in film and real life. Mental health and addiction, especially the process of alienation from society in horror is hidden in plain sight. Where I have seen it is in supernatural movies involving ghosts, demons, and other malevolent spirits. The process of alienation and suppression between society and the character is similar to how communities shun individuals who suffer from debilitating mental illnesses and substance abuse. Even the character at the hands of the paranormal demonstrate this; feelings of helplessness, separation, meaninglessness, and ultimately the feeling of danger in their own space. The way characters in movies such as The Exorcist (1973) and Veronica (2017) are shunned in their own neighbourhoods is reminiscent of how individuals suffering from mental health and addiction are outcasted by family, friends, and society as a whole.   That feeling of empathy you experience for the character is what members of your community deserve. Like the presence of a spirit in a horror movie, mental illness and addiction is not something one does not thrust upon themselves; it is something that must be endured until the right assistance is achieved. It is not a swift altercation, but a parasite that slowly feeds on the joy and vitality of a person. It is not who they are - it is their weight that they carry with them.

 MEET ME AT PLUTO follows the retro-futuristic style of the series, but is a bit different from the other pieces. Film brings people together; it creates a moment for people to get together, enjoy art, have conversations, and feel the rollercoaster of emotion that a movie can bring. Movies have been an immense part of my human experience, because it is on of the ways I can connect with my family in friends. Horror movies in particular have done this in a way I can never repay, and have given me some of my favourite memories. My personal favourites are The Shining (1980), Hereditary (2019), and Black Christmas.   During the pandemic, there has been a disconnect in our human experience. Life has become lonelier with the absence of human interaction, leaving us to remain in this purgatorial state of existence. This lack of social interaction can have permanent effects on our mental health, rendering us floating through life in a bubble. Not being able to be with friends and family, doing the thing I love most has been agonizing.   I created MEET ME AT PLUTO as a love letter to film, as well as the people I share this love with. It is also a visual representation of how I feel society is at this moment; lost in space, fading into a melancholic state full of omnipresence.

 A lot of what horror does is assign power. Whether it is in an intimate relationship of between two strangers, it can be either obvious or surprising who really has the strength in the relationship. Film, more often than not portrays men as being the ultimate figure of authority and power, claiming their counterpart as an aloof or submissive contributor. This unfortunately can translate into real life, with the outcome being that a lot of men believe they hold an upper hand. What is missing is the reality that women are in charge of their own destiny, controlling their own reality. I wanted to portray an image of women in power, not at the mercy of toxic masculinity.   With imagery influenced by films such as Pulp Fiction (1994) and Ultraviolet (2006), VENUS AND MARS shows a women after stabbing a man on an extraterrestrial planet. While “Mars” lays on the floor with a knife in his chest, it is easy to assume that “Venus” is the culprit behind this murder. Instead of showing any sign of negative or positive exaggerated emotion, she is calm and contemplating. This action seems calculated, and “Venus” now ponders over her next move. The action does not seem malicious, but she does not seem remorseful. This ultimately begs the question; is she a killer, or a survivor?  I chose the personas of Venus and Mars for more than a planetary reference. Venus is in reference to the Roman goddess of love, while Mars is the god of war. It seems fitting that love and war battle each other, which in reality is quite common. In this scenario, love wins.

 There is power in being beautiful, but there is also power in feeling beautiful. Society has attempted to maintain guidelines to what is apporpriately “beautiful” for women, plauging social media and advertising which evidently diverts viewers from the truth; beauty is physically diverse and is found within, not on a timeline or a magazine. All women are sources of beauty internally and externally. Nebula is dedicated to all women in my life as well as outside of it, and is a call for the standards of beauty to recognize the vitality of diversity and self love.

 Self reflection in an immense part of the human experience. If we are not able to look within and find who we really are, it becomes increasingly difficult to present our truest selves to the world around us. Our self reflection and self-idealization, mainly influenced by intense presence of social media and strains of social normality can obscure to the point of unregonizability. The Mirrors Image presents self reflection from an outside perspective, watching someone fall in love with a manufactured version of themselves rather than experiencing the reality they live at the moment.

The Great Escape captures the begining of the series as a quick decision of fate; to follow and participate in the experience without hesitation. It is a parallel to how the adolescents and young adults of society are expected to find their place in the world both swiftly and unprepared, accepting the fate they are believed to have chosen by themselves.
