Psychogeography, the effect of a space on a person’s behaviour, is the main influence on my work. I wander through spaces, photographing what I’m drawn to whether that be buildings, ripples in the beach or creases in my bed sheets. I then bring those photographs together to corrupt and work off each other to create a new sense of place. I often take this further by abstracting those photographs through darkening to the edge of vision so that the image is still subtlety visible when up-close. The images lose their existing sense of place and come together to form a new one for the viewer to decipher. When laser printed on black paper the images are dependent on light to be further abstracted or to be able to be seen as a clearer image. The viewer is forced to move in the space to view the image, creating a psychogeographic experience within the gallery space. 

The Place

This was my second year, second semester project for my Fine Art degree at Loughborough University. It revolved around how low I was feeling at the time, exploring the emotions through art in order to help me move through them. I explored the emotions through text, pairing it with analogue photography to also give the work some visual context. I also explored the tear through video work, editing the footage through things like slowing it down in order to hyper focus on the single tear. 

A New Feeling

Taken from my video piece for the 'feet on the ground, head in the sky' exhibition with Modern Painters, New Decorators, this version of All the Places I'd Call Home has been adapted into book form. Here are some snippets of it. 

I wanted to explore my connections to the spaces around the three family homes I've had in my life through text and Polaroids. I chose to use Polaroids because of their connection to nostalgia and their limitations of only being able to take as many as you have.

I wrote the text whilst in the spaces, reflecting on my experiences, memories and how connected I felt towards them in terms of viewing them as home. In the video piece I narrated the passages myself in order to fully claim the experiences as my own. For this same reason I wrote the passages in my handwriting rather than using digital fonts like I have done in previous projects.

All The Places I'd Call Home

The exhibition 'feet on the ground, head in the sky' was a result of Modern Painters, New Decorators graduate project where myself and 2 other recent Loughborough University graduates undertook a 3 month residency. The project I developed on the residency was an exploration of my connection to space, viewing it in terms of home. I wandered through the spaces surrounding my 3 family homes I've had in my life, my new home, my old home and my old old home, to see my connection to them had changed.

The work of mine featured in the exhibition were four 35mm photographs digitally printed on paper and a 3 mintute long video piece entitled 'All The Places I'd Call Home'.
