

The Berlin Art Prize is pleased to invite you to the 2014 exhibition opening and awards ceremony on 14 June 2014 at Kühlhaus Berlin at U-Bahn Gleisdreieck. The exhibition will show the nominated artworks by 30 artists selected from over 1200 applicants. On the evening of the 14th of June, three winners, selected by the jury   (Cosima von Bonin, Kimberly Bradley, Judith Hopf, Egill Saebjörnsson und Nicolaus Schafhausen) will be announced and awarded with a one month residency in Tbilisi, Georgia, prize money, and a trophy created for the occasion by artist Markus Selg. 

The evening will also mark the release of the Berlin Art Prize 2014 catalog, featuring the work of all artists represented, as well as statements from the jury and essays by Kimberly Bradley, René Pollesch, Felicia Zeller, and Eva Wilson in dialog with Sophie Jung. The catalog will be available for purchase after the winners are announced. 

We invite you to celebrate this festive occasion with us! Catering by Max Frey, with a special midnight set by DJs Dirk von Lowtzow, Cosima von Bonin, and Justus Köhncke, followed by DJ Steev Lemercier/WIKIMIXXX.

The Berlin Art Prize exhibition runs through the 28th of June and will be open Tuesday – Saturday from 1pm to 7pm. Numerous lectures, events, and performances are planned during the exhibition including: a presentation of editions from Lake & Only, invited by NOTE ON, and a long evening of music by Jason Grier combining electronic and acoustic instruments (17 June); a flash exhibition of “MOMR – Muesum Of Mroden Rat” – a collection of images echoing the work of Des Ptohograhpies (18 – 20 June); a seminar for artists on how to create a portfolio, statement, and successfully apply for funding organized by cultural manager Marie Egger followed by an evening performance from legendary champion of acid feminism, Labanna Babalon (20 June); presentation from Berlin Art Prize Nominees and a discussion on the (woes of the) politics of arts funding with members of the BBK and Freie Szene Berlin (24 June); The Kakofonie's 5th Birthday! An evening organized by John Holten and Broken Dimanche Press marking five years of Berlin-based The Kakofonie - The International Journal of Art and Literature.(26 June); among other events. Einladung zur feierlichen Eröffnung und Preisverleihung

Der Berlin Art Prize e.V. freut sich, Sie zur Eröffnung der Ausstellung und zur feierlichen Preisverleihung am 14. Juni 2014 ins Kühlhaus am Gleisdreieck einzuladen. Die Ausstellung zeigt die nominierten Arbeiten von 30 Berliner Künstlern, die von der diesjährigen Jury bestehend aus Cosima von Bonin, Kimberly Bradley, Judith Hopf, Egill Saebjörnsson und Nicolaus Schafhausen, aus über 1200 diesjährigen Einreichungen ausgewählt wurden. Die drei Preisgewinner des Berlin Art Prize 2014 werden mit einer Trophäe, exklusiv für vom Künstler Markus Selg für die drei Preisträger gestaltet, einem Preisgeld und einer Residency in Tbilissi, Georgien, honoriert.

Am Abend der Verleihung wird ebenfalls der Katalog des Berlin Art Prize 2014 veröffentlicht. Er präsentiert alle 30 künstlerischen Positionen der Ausstellung, mit zusätzlichen Beiträgen der Jury und Texten von René  Pollesch, Felicia Zeller, Kimberly Bradley und Eva Wilson im Dialog mit Sophie Jung. Der Katalog wird nach Bekanntgabe der drei Gewinner um 20.30h zum Verkauf bereit stehen und später im ausgewählten Kunstbuchhandel erhältlich sein. 

Im Anschluss an die Eröffnung der Ausstellung wird es eine After-Party geben. Die musikalische Begleitung stellt das DJ-Triple Cosima von Bonin, Justus Köhncke und Dirk von Lowtzow (ab 0.00h), gefolgt von DJ Steeve Lemercier/ WIKIMIXXX.

Die Ausstellung ist vom 17. Juni bis zum 28. Juni geöffnet und wird von einem kostenlosen Rahmenprogramm begleitet, unter anderem ein Konzertabend des Avantgardemusikers Jason Grier, einer kuratorischen Intervention von Note On, die den Schweizer Ausstellungsraum/Residencyprogramm einladen, ausgewählte Editionen zu zeigen (Dienstag, 17.6.), eine Flash Exhibition des MOMR – Muesum Of Mroden Rat angelehnt an den Arbeiten von Des Ptohograhpies (18. – 20. Juni), ein Seminar von der Kulturmanagerin Marie Egger über Bewerbungsstrategien und Fördermöglichkeiten von Künstlern in Berlin, eine Performance der Acid Feministin Labanna Babalon (20. Juni), einen Diskussionsabend mit Mitgliedern des BBK und der Freien Szene Berlin (24. Juni); und einen Lesungs- und Performance-Abend, kuratiert von dem Berliner Künstlerbuchverleger John Holten von Broken Dimanche Press, (26. Juni).

Our small team has been working hard to bring the Berlin Art Prize 2014 into realisation. In just one year we’ve grown a lot, with over 1,200 Berlin-based artists applying for the prize in this year. As a team of enthusiastic volunteers, we are continually seeking financial backing for the Berlin Art Prize and for this reason we have decided to start a crowd funding campaign with StartNext. The Berlin Art Prize represents a converse standpoint to traditional art prizes. It is the only art prize in Berlin, and one of the only in the world, that evaluates applicant’s work based purely on artistic merit. The prize is open to every artist residing in Berlin, charges no application fee, and has a diverse program of events free of charge to attend. In order to achieve this we rely on a network of unpaid volunteers, but we strive to support the musicians, academics, artists, and performers that participate in the Berlin Art Prize through modest financial remuneration. Through these means, we are attempting to change the conditions through which art and creatives are assessed. 

You may be thinking: “But I don’t live in Berlin.” or “Why would I support the Berlin Art Prize?” The answer is simple – the Berlin Art Prize offers support to far more than just Berlin-based artists. While the applicants, essayists, and lecturers live here, they come from all over the world. Current and past participants are from the U.S.A., Great Britain, Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Scotland, Ireland, Lithuania, and Japan. We created the prize knowing that the artists may or may not remain in Berlin, but the title of Berlin Art Prize Nominee is something they can proudly use for the promotion of their own work wherever they go. Support for the Berlin Art Prize is support for the arts internationally. 

Your donation goes directly towards the production of the exhibition, the residency for the three winning artists, the creation of a catalog in German and English with essays by René Pollesch, Felicia Zeller, Kimberly Bradley, and Eva Wilson, a lecture series with internationally relevant topics in contemporary art, such as gender in the arts and how to create an outstanding portfolio and successfully apply for funding, and the maintenance of our database, which is used to support the artists throughout the year.

Crowdfunding the Berlin Art Prize. Only a few days left to show your support!

 The Berlin Art Prize is pleased to announce the opening of the exhibition and the award ceremony on Saturday the 22nd of June, 2013

The three winners of the first Berlin Art Prize will be announced live on the evening of the ceremony. Three artists in the categories Best Concept, Best Composition and Jury's Choice will be awarded with a two-week residency in a villa in Umbria, an excursion to the Venice Biennale, award money and a trophy made by the Berlin artist Quirin Bäumler.
