Explore abstract artwork with my latest piece. It is a painting that I completed having taken an abstract art course. One that was aimed to release my inner child and help me create more honestly and freely. I'd like to think that with the help of Rose Hewartson I have had someone holding my hand and guiding me through my recovery. From the moment I came home not knowing whether I would ever paint again. To the incredible feeling of honesty and freedom that comes with creating a piece of work from your heart. I am hopefully freer and less fearful than I was before. I really hope that it shows.

Using Artist Grade acrylics in the primary colours and mixing directly on the canvas. I used my trusted water spray and in addition grabbed a plastic fork to scratch in some marks.

'Carefree Harmony - Releasing My Inner Child'

Sometimes, inspiration strikes in unexpected ways. After a hiatus from the studio, I returned to my canvas waiting, but the original vision had shifted. So I embraced the unexpected and covered it in a vibrant array of acrylic spray paints. Thus creating a truly unique base layer. The name **“Breakthrough”** holds a deeper meaning for me - it reflects both the positive and negative aspects of my journey. While I’ve been experiencing breakthrough seizures, I remain hopeful for a breakthrough in treatment. Here’s to art, resilience and the pursuit of breakthroughs in every form.

'Breakthrough'

Painted whilst wrestling with the decision as to whether I should go ahead with brain surgery, weighing up the pros and cons. Art has been even more of a therapy lately, I must admit to loving the shapes that appeared as I was mark making and expressing myself through paint. Is that a frog I can see and a fish ?

**'A Moment Of Reflection'** really captures the depth and complexity I was feeling while creating it. I loved using black as a standalone colour for the first time - it added a bold new dynamic to the piece. The combination of blue, green, purple and white alongside the black creates an emotional yet calming atmosphere, while also conveying those heavier themes of fragility and compassion.

'Moment Of reflection'

This piece took a little longer than usual because I started it a couple of weeks after being discharged from hospital.

Because of the bleed on my brain my speech wasn't back to normal and my thought process was restricted. I managed to do the under painting and a couple of colourful splashes before stopping.

But after a visit from the speech therapist, my family and some online encouragement here we are.

'Cut Through All The Crazy'

I had no preconceived idea as to how this painting would turn out. I failed to plan, but was led instead with my comfort colour of purple as a base layer and waited to see what came on top. Putting myself at ease in my comfort zone of colours and sound, and relaxing into the painting.

It might have helped that I was about to go on a long awaited holiday, so I was excited and full of anticipation.

What can you see?

I like to think it’s someone communicating with their dog. They could be training, working, or just out for a walk. There’s definitely energy between them, as to whether the dog is being praised or chastised, I’m not sure … that’s up to you.

As for me, I’m pretty sure I’m telling Obi to be good while we’re away... well, that's the one-way conversation that lasted the duration of our time together in the studio.

'Conversation With My Dog'

This piece is one of my favourites because it was created in collaboration with artists I follow on Instagram, whose opinions I value greatly. It also features my favourite colours, purple and teal. I was unsure of what the final colour needed to be, so I provided three options in the hopes of getting some helpful feedback. Thus,**"Teamwork".** 

The layers of paint have not only created colour interest but given the painting texture in places too.

'Teamwork'

This painting represents who I am as a person and artist. Although epilepsy is a huge part of my life, I strive not to let it define who I am.

This was not the first painting-related seizure I've experienced, but I typically manage to put my brushes down first. However, this time it was all captured on the canvas. I returned to it the following day, to make sense of the painting, so a lot of it is painted over, but there are obvious marks still visible. The turmoil that was in my head that day actually looks quite beautiful when given some order.

If I can use my art to promote self awareness (getting people to stop and think for a second) and raising money for desperately needed research into neurological illnesses, I consider myself blessed.

That’s why I feel there’s a lot of hope in this painting too.

'Seize The Day'

I'm not sure there's anything else I could call this piece! 

I thought that my life had changed with the introduction of a new drug last year, everything was going so well. But it seems that my body has got used to it and decided that it no longer has any therapeutic effect. It has taken me 3 months to admit it, but I'm worse than I was and can't take the side effects and the seizures. So during a calm moment I spilled my emotions onto this canvas.

An artist friend called it 'pain art' they weren't being unkind, maybe that's how it's seen by a lot of people!? For me it's cathartic.
