About

My photographs are experiments built around intuitive explorations of style and mood. I work with props, very particular locations, conventional styling, elements of performance and theatrical magic to create each work in collaboration with the subject of the photo. A core focus of my practice and research is a consideration of femininity within the modern world. I also work with parallel inspirations from nature and culture, using landscape and the built environment to generate narrative around the person in the photograph. My images often balance a straightforward level of familiarity with an uncanny, uncomfortable or outlandish element. This can include plays on scale and the introduction of fantasy into an otherwise normal scene. In some pieces the overall graphic structure of the composition is all-powerful, with the figure becoming a dynamic disruption to or re-assertion of the overall pattern. Within others the focus is stripped down and the figure seems to embody a filmic moment or turning point within a plot. I work through conscious and unconscious processes in conceiving my work, incorporating meditation and recent studies in art therapy to reflect on our relationships to image making.
