To continue with this project, we are exploring the theme of self-acceptance remotely by collaborating to
create, record and film our works within isolation and share them online. We are currently in the process
of making our three-part Internal series, with themes of “Monotony”, "Information” and “Connection”. The series depicts our individual experiences while demonstrating the
universal isolation experience, a representational audio visual work which will collectively resonate with
the global experiences of many.

Monotony Excerpt - Internal Series

The Upper Hand is an interdisciplinary duet piece , devised and performed by dancer Alice Presencer
and violinist Jane Hackett. The piece explores the internal obstacles within forming one’s sense of self,
showing the trials and tribulations within self-acceptance. The piece follows a struggle for control
between the two performers, demonstrating the experience of instability when faced with one’s
inner-saboteur. The use of symbolism in the sound, movement and visuals of the piece shows the
essential cooperation between light and dark and how one cannot exist without the other. The work
reveals a journey of self-reflection, tension, sabotage, manipulation, support, intimacy, cooperation and
acceptance.

The piece was commissioned by Kirkos Ensemble, a contemporary music ensemble based in Ireland to
find new ways to work with lighting, shadows, sound and movement, The Upper Hand had its debut in
Dublin, March 2020.
