_The Retracing_ is a recreating of a memory image that Yang had after a hiking experience with James Benning—the pioneering filmmaker, also a faculty at CalArts—in a valley around Castaic Lake, California. Through the process, he incessantly struggles between a detail in his mind (the shadow on him) and the reality, and comes to the conclusion that the truth of that image can only be approached rather than discovered. Five inkjet prints are presented together with twenty-two pieces of paper that narrate the story.

The Retracing

_Untitled (Basketball Shooting)_ shows a man doing basketball shooting without a real ball in an ordinary neighborhood. The action that is born with a specific goal turns into a purposeless, habitual behavior. On the contrary, his partner walks naturally a little ahead, detached from his enjoyment.

In _Untitled (Seated Man),_ a man is putting his feet onto his shoes in the wild. His posture and expression implicate a sense of reluctance: he comes up with the idea of being naked in nature but can not go further after taking off his shoes and socks; he wants to feel the ground but is reluctant to get his feet dirty. The picture shows a moment when the civilized and the animal side collide within a human being.

Untitled (Seated Man)

_Tian Mi Mi_ is an endeavor to recreate a frame of the music video of _Tian Mi Mi_ (or Sweet as Honey), a 1979 Chinese song by Teresa Teng. In that frame, according to Yang's memory, Teresa, in a long, white dress, sits on the rear seat of a bicycle or tricycle, slightly turning around with a light, enigmatic smile. Yang first saw the video in his childhood while going through his mother’s album collection. Years later, when that specific frame suddenly was recalled, he could not find that video again. He shot a 26-minute video and watched it frame by frame, intending to pick out a single image that was identical to the one in mind. The attempt, however, turned out only to be a failure. The memory image is not as specific as a real image that can be claimed every detail of.

Zhang Daiqing Under the Chaste Tree

The diptych _Ceramic Art and Design Lab, Tsinghua University_ presents a choreography of student-made ceramic works, among which the properties and potentials differ: glazed versus unglazed; jars seem to be for everyday use versus fine art sculptures; works for exhibitions versus works only for practice; to be taken versus to be forgotten and stay… Each shelf is a unity of objects in “finished” and “unfinished” states. The harmony of it is founded on its internal tension and diversity.

As the title suggests, a woman is crouching down to identify a plant. Yet her delicate dressing and the unremarkable surroundings show a contradiction, together with the lush violet and the inconspicuous weed being identified.
