Did you know that Central Park is also an African Burial Ground?

  
Seneca Village was a Black town in NYC created in 1825, from 82nd to 89th St and between 7th and 8th Ave. The African Methodist Episcopalian Zion Church, which was downtown in what is now Tribeca, purchased some of the first lots there for burying purposes. Seneca Village grew into a thriving community of 255 residents, 3 churches, 2 schools and three cemeteries before it was destroyed in 1857 to build Central Park.

What a fabulous experience we had at the Metropolitan Museum of Art Feb 24 & 25 celebrating the free Black community of Seneca Village (1825-1857). It boasted 250 residents, 3 churches, 55 homes, a school, gardens and cemeteries before it was destroyed to make space for NYC's Central Park via eminent domain. 

If you have not visited the Met’s Seneca Village Afro-Futuristic Period Room yet, in person or digitally, you’re in for a treat!
