"Recess" is a series of objects found in a thrift store and painted in enamel and adhered to the wall.

I used old fabrics that were initially intended to be used for scrap rags. The stitching form is somewhat arbitrary - The length of the lines produced correspond to the length of the thread.

This was a commissioned work I completed in April 2021. It took two weeks to finish, painting in the wind and sun up a 3 story moble scaffold tower. It was commissioned by the manager of Franco Manca who wanted to brighten up the front fracing side of her restaurant in central Brighton. The mural sits looking down upon the North Laines, right in the centre of Brighton.

"Humming Harder" is simply a piece assembled with old painting stir sticks I've used throughout the years.

"Parquet Play" is a game where the pieces used came from 20 paintings used for a different project. Dice are rolled to determine:

1. which piece from which painting to use
2. what orientation to use (peak up or down)

Once the piece and orientation is determined the participant can add it to either side of the line.

For some reason I kept my old cassette tapes around for years. Now I know why.

I used #2 plastic bottles that my family went through. 

Nothing Hides The Color of The Light That Shines

"Atsuko" is an interactive game where participants adhere tin cans to the wall through the roll of dice. The "board" is a grid of 12 squares (3x4) that informs the players where to put the cans. the size of the grid is dependent on the space. 

They roll twice. The first tin can is placed on the grid square correspondent to the number rolled. The second is connected to the first by yarn and is placed within the square they roll next. Participants can place the cans anywhere within the square.

The title is a reference to artist Atsuko Tanaka.

Atsuko? It's Tom!

“Thomas” is an interactive game where the form is determined by the roll of dice. It can be played with multiple players.

1. Organize the tracks in rows

2. Start with one divergent track - nail this track to the wall.

3. Roll dice to determine which track will be used next. For example, if you roll a “6,” choose the 6th track in the row.

4. Add selected track to existing tracks on the wall. The tracks are made up of two colors. You can connect it to any track that does not contain the same colored parts. For instance, there is the color on the inside “rails” and the color of the track body. You cannot connect a piece with pink rails with another piece that has pink rails. You can, however, connect a piece with pink rails to one that has a pink body as long as the rails are a different colors. If there are multiple options, placement is dependent upon the player.

5. Repeat turns between players until all tracks are used.

Day Job is a piece made up of repurposed materials, sometimes from old stretcher bars, sometimes scrap I had lying around. It was a response to Brazilian artist Sergio de Camargo's work. The pieces of wood are assembled and the colors were chosen through chance operations.

" Emma Ross and Tom Neill worked together on a digital art project. Not only this project was about art it combined with technology.

" At the start of lock down I started to advertise virtual photoshoots. Tom messaged me with a creative idea to create a  digital art project. 

" As communication is key in this lockdown I really felt that his project spoke to a lot of people and it was very uplifting. so I jumped at the chance to work with him.

" Felt that the use of technology within the shoot was creative way of adapting photoshoots projects. 

" It really resonated with me how much change can be a positive thing all it takes is a little bit of work and organisation and the artistic flow came very naturally.

" Definitely feel like this is the start of something new. "

" I wanted to demonstrate the quality and possibility of creating photographs virtually, and to show that the digital medium is not necessarily a barrier to connection between artists, or to the reproduction of atmosphere and emotion in an image.

" The challenges of shooting via Zoom became assets to the art; the hyper-contrast contributing boldness and grit; the fish-eye of the mobile phone lens bringing unique angles and exaggerations; the home setting and natural light provided both a warmness and an opportunity to play with backgrounds. Interestingly, the pixels of the screen became, for me, a reminiscence of film photography, recalling the canvas like texture of photo-paper and graininess of high speed film.

" Without being together, without studio resources and the ability to work in three dimensions, part of the fun of the work was the increased conversation about how to get the best results - in a way, an improved correspondence between artists. "

This was my first ever show and incorporated elements of my first years painting. My first birthday. It ran for 5 days from 11th March 15th March 2020 in the Edel Extra exhibition space and gallery situated in the Gostenhof area of Nürnberg, Germany.

Through poetry and film, Tom expresses his feelings as a young person living in a cyber reality, where all love is lost somewhere in the deeper facets of the internet, replaced by a never ending search and lust for more. Tom conveys the darker aspects of contemporary society by highlighting on our continued obsession with virtual persona. THE OBJECT AND YOU (2020) is a story of isolation, loneliness, vanity and narcissism, but also optimism for a chance of rehabilitation and finding human connection.

TOM is a short narrative film about the relationship between two friends on a summer painting course in the historic, Gauguin-ish artist colony of Pont-Aven in Brittany France. With TOM I intend to resist restrictive categorisation of sexuality and romance. The film will be shot predominantly on green-screen, employing computer generated imagery for backgrounds, making the film's aesthetic fairly stylised.
