This piece explores the paradox of ego or self-growth. To move forward, one must look back on oneself to understand one's mistakes, but this can get us stuck in the past and prevent us from moving forward. The figure uses footprints to move forward but becomes stuck after seeing her own reflection. The feet are pointing forward, ready to leap, but the face looks back and down. To create this painting, I drew on imagery from the myth of Narcisus, where he freezes in love and obsession after seeing his own reflection. 

Paradox of ego

I delve into the dichotomy of emotion and performance and the paradox of art. Based on a moment of genuine and unexpected heartbreak, I created this self-portrait to express my pain, but as I began painting on a larger scale, the piece became performative. The act of crying is romanticized as comical large blue tears perfectly fall within the frame of the painting. Her bright orange hair is neatly and precisely curled at the tips, creating a decorative and repetitive motif. She is presented in an idealized profile with beautiful red lips and a red dot for a nostril. Compositionally, this piece is highly performative as every element is planned, such as the complementary pallet and the push and pull between figuration and abstraction through shapes, repetition, and decorative elements, while also depicting a romantic image of a weeping woman.
