For nearly 80 years, **Sawtooth School for Visual Art** has been a creative hub for the region—an energetic craft school environment located in downtown Winston-Salem, NC. Our year-long **Artist-in-Residence programs** encourage emerging artists to develop new skills, foster community connections, and create new bodies of work while assisting with studio operations. These residencies prioritize self-exploration and personal growth while also offering ample support for professional development, including opportunities for teaching and exhibitions.

**Sawtooth's Print Studio** is one of the few community print shops in North Carolina. It supports a wide range of printmaking techniques, including intaglio, monoprint, relief, book arts, and letterpress. The studio offers access to multiple presses and emphasizes innovative, solventless methods. Our intaglio facilities utilize low-toxicity grounds and removers, making it a safer and more sustainable environment for artists.

The **Schupbach-Gordon Resident in Printmaking** is a year-long program designed for emerging printmakers to expand their skills, explore new techniques, and gain valuable teaching experience in a nurturing and inclusive setting. The ideal candidate should hold a BA/BFA or MA/MFA in printmaking, be self-directed, and capable of working independently. Preference will be given to applicants who have demonstrated artistic excellence and show a strong interest in experimentation and innovation.

  
**RESPONSIBILITIES:**

* Residents are expected to contribute **10 hours weekly** to studio maintenance, outreach to local schools, hanging print shows, or other exhibition assistance. Print studio maintenance includes organizing and storing type, monitoring mordants, and general upkeep.
* The resident will assist in **annual studio fundraisers**, community programs, and the **annual print portfolio**.
* Residents have the opportunity to assume **teaching positions** at Sawtooth. These roles are financially compensated and are separate from the residency stipend.
* Residents are encouraged to **sell their work** in Sawtooth’s Marta Blades Gallery Shop and participate in the **annual holiday market**.

  

* Twelve months of 24/7 access to the Sawtooth Print Shop when class is not in session.
* The resident will receive a monthly stipend of $500, for a total of $6,000.
* They will have access to storage space for tools and materials, as well as inks and standard shop supplies. Additionally, Sawtooth School offers various studios for ceramics, drawing, metals, photography, and a woodshop.
* The resident is eligible to take all Print Department classes or workshops tuition-free and can access discounts to other Sawtooth departments’ classes on a case-by-case basis.
* Sawtooth School will facilitate structured and unstructured opportunities for the resident to engage with the broader community, including making at least one presentation.
* They will also be able to showcase their work in the Residency Show at the gallery after their residency term, with Sawtooth School providing curatorial and technical support.
* One year of access to Adobe Creative Suite All Apps plan, including Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and more.

Sawtooth’s residencies prioritize self-exploration and personal growth while also providing support for professional development, including potential teaching and exhibition opportunities.

The **Gondring Residency in Woodworking** is a one-year program that offers emerging woodworkers the opportunity to hone their skills and gain valuable teaching experience in a supportive and welcoming environment. Selected by the Director of Wood Programs along with a rotating jury, applicants are evaluated based on the quality of their work, dedication to their craft, and their willingness to bring fresh perspectives to the creative community at Sawtooth.

  
**Teaching**

Sawtooth is committed to strengthening our community’s creative core by providing high-quality instruction and hands-on visual art experiences for students of all ages, backgrounds, and skill levels. In alignment with this mission, the **Artist-in-Residence program** supports emerging craft educators in developing their teaching repertoire.

Residents are **not required to have prior teaching experience**, only a desire to develop their instructional skills. The resident will work closely with the **Director of Wood Programs** to design classes and workshops that align with their skill set and highlight the unique perspective they bring to Sawtooth’s creative community.

  
**Responsibilities**

* Residents are required to work **5 hours per week** for Sawtooth and will report to the Director of Wood Programs. Assignments may include studio maintenance, improvement projects, workshop preparation, and gallery installation support.
* Residents are expected to **produce a body of work** during their residency, with the intent to exhibit it in Sawtooth’s **Davis Gallery** near the end of the term.
* Residents should make **active personal use** of their studios, averaging about **15 hours per week**.
* Residents are responsible for their own **materials, consumables, housing, and transportation**.

  
Residency begins September 1, 2025, and ends August 31, 2026, with the start and end dates being flexible.

  

* A stipend of $3,000 annually is provided, which will be paid in monthly installments by direct deposit.
* Semi-private studio space to store their materials, tools, and in-progress work.
* 24/7 access to their personal studio and access to the wood and lathe studios when no class is in session.
* The resident is eligible to take one Wood Department class or workshop tuition-free per session and can access discounts to other Sawtooth departments’ classes on a case-by-case basis.
* Residents have the opportunity to assist the Wood Department’s Visiting Artist and Luminaries Workshops.
* Residents have the opportunity to teach at Sawtooth. Teaching positions are paid.
* Residents are encouraged to sell their work in Sawtooth’s Marta Blades Gallery Shop.
* At the conclusion of the residency term, residents are given the opportunity to participate in an exhibition in Sawtooth’s Eleanor and Egbert Davis Gallery.
