What's in a Name? is an arts project commissioned by Public Art Matters on behalf of Taylor Wimpey.

  
The commission will be amongst the first in a series of new cultural commissions for the Former Wisley Airfield, a major new housing development in the parish of Ockham, Surrey, which will evolve over the next 13 years.

  
We invite applications from writers, wordsmiths, artists and poets with a demonstrable interest in heritage and place-based research to develop a clear naming methodology which will be applied to the new neighbourhoods and surrounding green spaces. Outputs will include suggested names for the first neighbourhood and a short place based poem. To assist with the selected artist's place-based research, the commission will include engagement with local stakeholders to reflect and incorporate local heritage to help anchor the new development within its local context.

The artist will invoice and manage their design fee which must include all materials and costs incurred in the delivery of the work. This is to include, for example:

  
· Artist’s commission and design fee;

· Research costs;

· All expenses including travel, accommodation and presentation materials;

· Professional fees and legal costs;

  
It will be the responsibility of the appointed artist, working with the commissioner and client, to ensure that the project is delivered within this budget and this may require the reworking of the proposals.

Our cultural vision is inspired by the innovators and pioneers that lived in the area through the last centuries. We know that to live well now and in the future means finding ways to live sustainably for the health of both people and the planet.

  
We will build on the history of the beautiful parkland across Surrey and the site’s surrounding commons and heathland. The existing Ockham community will expand through new neighbourhoods set in the landscape.

  
It is well understood that living in close proximity to nature is hugely positive for health and wellbeing. Our objective is for culture and creativity to play a key role in how this is experienced and the benefits this will bring to people living here.

  
Cultural Wellbeing is a core principle in the National Planning Policy Framework and there is a fast growing body of evidence that creativity and the arts make a significant difference to people’s health and wellbeing, and to how they feel about, and interact with, their neighbours. We know that creativity is good for us and according to the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, over three quarters of us take part in the arts each year.

  
We want to ensure that access to culture and ways to be creative are carefully considered and planned for at Stratford View, Upper Ockham and Upton End, so that community culture can flourish and evolve over time.

Total artwork budget: £30,000 + landscaping contribution
