About
PICTURE BERLIN, founded in 2009, is an artist-initiated program developed by artists for artists. We have received numerous emails with concerns about the current war in the Ukraine coupled with continued anxiety around Covid and we have decided, in a very unprecedented move, to change our in-person Spring Session residency experience into a virtual happening.
The Spring Session hybrid online residency edition*, MIXED METHODOLOGIES (26 - 31 May) will take place, in a shorter yet intensive virtual format giving the opportunity for potential incoming residents to apply with a new extended deadline of 5 May 2022.
MIXED METHODOLOGIES is focused on idea and knowledge exchange; as artists we are all engaged in this way. But, this Session particularly offers an opportunity for a vivid and intense conversation particularly considering how artists use a variety of methodologies to create, inspire, and develop their work. PICTURE BERLIN is mixed discipline and welcomes artists from all nationalities identifying as visual, conceptual, video, writers, poets, multidisciplinary, performance, installation and photographers.
PICTURE BERLIN is known for its immersive programming. This unique online edition will have the same type of immersion by all of us (virtual participants and core group of Berlin based artists and curators) meeting daily for 6 days in a row for 3 - 6 hours depending on the topic of the day. In addition, the program will end with an in-person exhibition at WIRWIR (wirwir.org) a project space in Berlin-Neukölln during Berlin Art Week (16 - 18 September).
Hybrid virtual in-person Spring Session 2022: 26 May: Show & Tell with the new participating artists (3 - 5 hours) 27 May: Artist studio talks with Berlin-based artists: Alisa Margolis, Isaac Wong Kai, (3 - 4 hours) 28 May: Sound workshop by Berlin based sound artist (6 hours) 29 May: The mechanics of creating your own artist run space; a round table discussion/presentation/Q&A with; April Gertler (from WIRWIR & SONNTAG), and Heiko Pfreundt (from Kreuzberg Pavilion) (3 hours) 30 May: Food and Storytelling workshop with Carolina Paoletti from The Onion Project (6 hours) 31 May: Individual private portfolio reviews with 6 Berlin based curators including Pauline Doutreluingne, Teena Lange, Lorena Juan, Power Ekroth, April Gertler and Hannah Goldstein (4 - 5 hours)
- 3 group follow up meetings will take place during the Summer to prepare for the in person show in Berlin in September: 29 June, 5 August, 1 September (2 hours for each meeting)
The physical component of the program will take the form of an exhibition to be held during weekend of Berlin Art Week (16 - 18 September 2022):
- 3-day exhibition in Berlin-Neukölln at WIRWIR (the artist will have the choice to send actual works or digital works (digital works will be projected outward onto one of the windows of WIRWIR which will allow for viewing by passersby).
In addition, this program also offers everyone:
- recordings of every meeting accessible for up to one year after the program meets
- your permanent artist representation in the artist section of the PICTURE BERLIN website
- up to a 1 week Instagram takeover during the Summer before the exhibition
- access to the extended PICTURE BERLIN network which features members from our 12 years of activities
- live stream of the September exhibition opening
