Spirit of Spark: Call for Artists
The competition is now open to select an artist to create a memorial to the writer Dame Muriel Spark. We are seeking expressions of interest from artists working in any medium to create a permanent public artwork in Edinburgh, Scotland that celebrates the life, work, and spirit of Muriel Spark - one of Scotland’s most original and internationally acclaimed writers. This high-profile commission invites bold and imaginative responses that reflect Spark’s sharp wit, literary brilliance and cultural legacy. Best known for The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie, Spark was a fearless innovator whose influence extended far beyond a single novel. Despite her global stature and strong ties to the city, Edinburgh has no permanent tribute to her.
**Why Apply?**This is a significant opportunity to create a lasting tribute to one of Scotland's finest writers in the world’s first UNESCO City of Literature. Artists from all backgrounds and disciplines are encouraged to apply for the chance of being awarded a commission of £100,000. The final artwork will be sited in Princes Street Gardens in the heart of Edinburgh and aims to create a legacy that celebrates Spark’s achievements while addressing the significant gender imbalance in public sculpture in the city.
