The Commission on Public Art (COPA) in Leesburg is seeking submissions for two asphalt murals at the ingress and egress of Lassiter Way alley, which consistently sees a large amount of foot traffic into and out of downtown Leesburg.
Project Description
The Town of Leesburg’s Commission on Public Art (COPA) in conjunction with Leesburg Movement, is initiating a contest for two detailed renditions in color and design of trompe l’oeil asphalt murals for the ingress and egress of the alley. Each mural will be treated as a separate Call to Artists, therefore artist/s can submit up to two designs.
Each mural will need to be between 10’ to 16’ wide and 10’ to 16’ in length. Final size is dependent upon the artist and design, as long as it falls in those perimeters.
It is the responsibility of the artist/artist team to research and submit a design with detailed information about the specialized paint and topcoat required for an asphalt mural, with particular attention to ensure safety of pedestrian traffic so as not to cause a hazard (e.g. slippery when wet). Artists must also take into consideration durability as the alley is subject to the elements and significant traffic.
Artwork Theme
The theme for the murals is “Wonderfully Leesburg.” Suggestions may include any subject that makes Leesburg unique (e.g. gardens, buildings, scenery, etc.). Keep in mind that this is a trompe l’oeil effect project and should photograph as such.
Murals Completed by September 4, 2025.
