studioworks artist-in-residence program
Founded in 2013 and now in its twelfth year, The StudioWorks Artist-in-Residence Program at the Tides Institute & Museum of Art (TIMA) offers residency opportunities to visual artists from the U.S. and abroad to deepen and develop their practice within a community setting. Our studios, museum and housing are located within the historic downtown and working waterfront of Eastport, Muselenk (Moose Island), Maine and overlook the U.S./Canada boundary. TIMA’s downtown StudioWorks building contains private studios, common work areas, and a ground floor printmaking and letterpress studio. TIMA is also developing a nearby larger scale North Church Project Space which provides additional studio workspace and exhibition opportunities.

4-week terms:

2-week terms for those who cannot attend for longer durations:
- between May 4 - Nov 14, during 4-week term periods listed above
The StudioWorks artist-in-residence program is open to professionally established and/or emerging visual artists and craftspeople from anywhere in the world. Artists from Washington County, Maine or Charlotte County, New Brunswick may apply but preference is given to those who do not already live and work in the region.
Proposals will be considered from artists working in drawing, painting, digital/new media, photography, printmaking, installation, sculpture, textiles or a combination of these. Craftspeople and artists working in wood, metal, fibers, ceramics or letterpress are also encouraged to apply. We do not have specialized studios other than for printmaking, but have had artists work in these media in the past, and have partnership arrangements within the community that may facilitate these kinds of projects.
StudioWorks welcomes artists from international locations. All programming is conducted in English and a working degree of English fluency is required to work in the community and with program staff.
Collaborative pairs intending to work on a shared project are eligible to apply. Each artist must apply separately to the program, and indicate in their proposals that they wish to work together. Please include evidence of collaborative work in images, if possible/applicable, and specify housing needs (separate or shared).
Who is not eligible to apply?
- Students who are enrolled in an undergraduate or masters-level degree program at the time of the application deadline are not eligible and should not apply. (Doctoral candidates are eligible and may apply).
- StudioWorks Alumni will be contacted directly about future opportunities, which have a separate application and review process. Alumni are not eligible to re-apply through this open call.
- Groups/collaboratives/collectives of more than 2 members.
Stipend: US Artists are eligible for a $2,000 stipend for a 4-week residency; $1,000 for a 2-week residency. Due to limitations of the H-2 visa, artists coming from international locations are not eligible for a stipend, but may be reimbursed for airfare, ground transportation, food and other living expenses, up to $2,000 for a 4-week residency; $1,000 for a 2-week residency.
