We cling to structure and efficiency, yet simultaneously we'd rather throw those rules overboard. We're guided by digital gadgets in our daily lives, yet simultaneously enthuse for products that excel in purity and craftsmanship. We plan our days down to the minute, while dreaming of slowing down. Doesn't this sound absurd?
And what if the absurd isn't a contradiction, but rather the playing field? What if it can surprise instead of alienate?
After a successful first edition in 2024, Kunstwerkt and Texture are organizing a second edition of Draad (Wire). This project focuses on visual artists at the beginning of their artistic journey and looking for a unique opportunity to showcase their work. For Draad, we are collaborating with Sadrie Alves (visual artist), Suzanne Landrieu (artist and founder of art space 4n20 in Kortrijk), and Sofie Hermans (textile designer and lecturer at the Maasmechelen Academy of Fine Arts and the Maastricht Academy of Fine Arts) to help shape the project. Together, we aim to celebrate the artistic versatility and freedom of textiles. In addition to this opportunity to showcase their work, the artists will receive support throughout their artistic and professional development, including training sessions and networking opportunities.
In this new edition of Draad, Kunstwerkt and Texture invite visual artists to play with these contrasts in absurd times. To embrace the bizarre when everything becomes more complex, faster, and stranger. Until October 14, 2025, we are looking for visual work that hints at textiles. We also encourage artists to think outside the box and question the boundaries of material and technique. A pixelated carpet, an embroidered phrase, a sculpture made from discarded textiles: it's all possible.
