This Call for Submissions is the first of its kind for our new programming model, which offers both a studio residency and an exhibition for each selected artist.
For this call, we will be programming 7 artists, with residencies starting in Winter 2026 until Summer 2027.
From this point onwards, we plan to make this an annual Call for Submissions, taking applications each Spring, and subsequently programming 4 artists each year, with their residencies beginning Fall of the following year.
Programming Philosophy & Description:
Each artist will begin with a 3-month long studio residency where they are encouraged to create, research, and experiment in any way they see fit. Through peer mentorship, staff will work alongside the artist helping them reach self-appointed goals and intentions. Whether that be support in application and grant writing, learning technical skills such as installation and strike of exhibitions, or helping them reach new networks of artists and curators to build their community.
After completing their residency, the artist will create an exhibition in our gallery space. We’ll be mentoring the artists through the process of creating an exhibition throughout their residency; this model gives artists a chance to both be in process and present their work to the community. Each exhibition will be 8-10 weeks long, and will take place directly after the end of the artists' residency.
We also want to relay that artists are not expected to create a full exhibition in the 3-month residency; the two parts are not interlinked unless that’s the artist's intention. Exhibitions can feature older work, experiments made throughout the studio residency, etc.
Details about the space:
The semi-private studio space is approximately 176 sq/ft with one window (cannot be opened). There are lockers to store valuables in, and two tables to work on. Artists are able to use the walls for displaying work.
Artists also have access to a small wood shop space (with orientation required), and various tools and hardware. There is a communal kitchen space with access to a fridge/freezer, microwave, coffee maker, kettle and various utensils.
We will have to limit the use of clay/ceramic, aerosols, or other potentially hazardous materials due to restrictions of the building and to stay cognizant of the shared workspace/gallery. If you are unsure whether your practice is suitable for this residency, please reach out to dan@stride.ab.ca prior to applying with any details you may need clarification on.
There are two accessible, gender-neutral washrooms.
The building is open to the public from 8am to 5pm on weekdays. The artist will have access to Stride 7am to 11pm, any day of the week, with a fob/key.
