The Department of Art, Culture, and History within the Office for Further Education and Culture of Berlin's Mitte District Office is responsible for five municipal exhibition spaces in the Mitte district: Bärenzwinger, Klosterruine Berlin, Kunst Raum Mitte, Galerie Wedding, and Galerie Nord. Despite their specific profiles, these municipal galleries and urban cultural venues represent important points of reference for artists and curators. They often provide the first opportunity to present their artistic work to a broader public, thus laying the foundation for a professional career. As spaces for artistic experimentation and new educational formats, these municipal galleries facilitate new perspectives on the city. Berlin's public can find free cultural offerings close to home here.
For over 30 years, Galerie Nord at Turmstraße 75 – previously known as the Obere Galerie am Lützowplatz – has offered younger artists in particular the opportunity to meet a broad audience without being obligated to commercialize their work. The Brothers Grimm House building complex is already used by various district institutions and independent organizations, including the Volkshochschule Mitte (adult education center), the Fanny Hensel Music School, and various social counseling centers. Thanks to its versatile use and central location, the listed Brothers Grimm House represents an important focal point for the entire Moabit district. Furthermore, the location is easily accessible by public transport, and its large window front makes it an attractive venue for the presentation of contemporary art. The gallery spaces are located on the ground floor and offer level, barrier-free access to the exhibition space.
As part of the ongoing development of the Galerie Nord at Turmstrasse 75, the Department of Art, Culture, and History is conducting an expression of interest process for the exhibition operation of a portion of the Galerie Nord's exhibition space (see Appendix 1 for the floor plan of the available spaces). The other portion will be used by the Department of Art, Culture, and History as the communal project space "Studio Nord" (AT) at Turmstrasse 75.
The primary goal of this call for proposals is to make the gallery's artistic program inclusive and diverse. The connection of Galerie Nord to the local art and culture scene is just as important as its supra-regional and international networking and positioning. This will enable the presentation of current artistic developments in the Moabit district and, at the same time, provide impetus for the dissemination of art and cultural education, as well as networking within the gallery and the neighborhood.
