residency for practitioners with a relation to the sea

Salmastra is holding an open call for a residency for practitioners who have a relation to the sea.

Regardless of their discipline, Salmastra wishes to encounter people that are keen in sharing personal situated knowledges and studies, with a particular focus on marine imaginaries. Our premises and hosting facilities are located by the sea but our city often feels severed from it: it is an unexpressed force that we wish to awaken with your curiosity and re-interpretations.

The research residency lasts for two months and wishes to develop in depth our core interests, such as:

• Unconventional representations of marine environments and its shores
• Critical approaches and situated knowledges on marine sustainability
• Local and site-specific practices in San Giovanni Li Cuti and its oral transmission
• Environmental impacts and role of marine life (EG: role of underwater algae forest in CO² absorption; regeneration of environments following cessation of the exploitation of its resources during the covid19 pandemic)
• Interspecies relationships: agency of marine ecosystems in an urban context.

Additionally, this research could be carried out in close dialogue with the nearby fishermen association Pesca & Mare and other locally active groups. Salmastra plans to platform the outcomes of such research in accessible and open forms that could concern audiences beyond actors in the cultural field.

We look for two practitioners in the arts, movement, theatre, cuisine, social activism, writing, design, architecture, textile, discursive practices, etc… that share our interest in offering new narratives about the sea with a critical, uncharted approach. Regardless of the medium or the material practice, we are interested in affinities in our concerns and stances.

The residency will take place in Catania, Sicily for two consecutive months between mid January and mid March 2024.
