"Severed"

Ran is good at using realistic techniques to "combine" elements obtained in reality to construct a surreal and contemplative picture. The same technique is also applied in Severed during his residency. But in this work, he deliberately weakened the sense of space that conforms to the logic of human vision to present a more surreal picture.

Artwork: The installation is made from Post it notes attached to the doors of my office/dining room. The work was based on the lost plans and expectations of ordinary life as people adapt to the effects of isolation, working from home, job losses and loss of many freedoms, a shattered window, a shattered view, devastation. The notes appear to pass through the window, the outside blowing straight into the room. They also signify lost communication, lost connection, blank, empty, like falling leaves, no longer useful, presaging the winter of stillness and rest and promise of new life in a later season thus making further links to the purpose of lockdown and self isolation. There is also a potentially joyful aspect to this work, that of confetti and celebration as people have time off work, a shared experience, a breathing space, connecting more with nature, briefly dispensing with work or office responsibilities. This work was initially installation inspired by The Royal Standard’s 48 hour art Fall Out challenge TEMPORARY.

Artwork: “Shadows of Frailty” looks at our vulnerability in the pandemic; how our feeling of safety is undermined with a common threat to survival. The paintings work in sections or pairings which echo my feeling of the weird compartmentalisation of life since lockdown and the polarisation of the challenges different sectors of the population experience.

Artwork: The coronavirus hits China like a huge fire. The disasters it caused confined me at home and bring me many real feelings about it. There are depressions, astonishment about the absurd reality, and continuous sadness. I’m trying to find out how to use different dynamic ways of rendering hope and therefore express many sad stories in my series of works; meanwhile use freedom of minds to break the confinement of my body. The shapes are applied to give some kind of static power; the lines are applied to rendering dynamic energy; when those are intertwined, is it possible for us to find out way to express sadness?

Artwork: The work examines the thoughts, hopes and feelings of a family during this unprecedented period of social distancing in the UK. The work looks at the concept that art is an expression of feeling and emotion at any age and hopes to ask ‘if art is art if the work is not created by professional artist and also if this art helps elevate isolation and add to the wellbeing of the creators and the observers’.

Artwork: Those works are so abstract that they seem to be irrelevant to the reality. However, each work is the outcome of relief of angers and anxieties. I try to express feelings and inner world simply through spots and color blocks which are in harmony though seem out of order. Angers from the reflection of human behaviour are presented on canvases which maybe a way to express angers.

Artwork: ‘This belongs to everyone, so enjoy the view’ depicts the alteration of landscapes through digital topography. The fragment of areas assembled together compose an ensemble of imaginary panoramas. Every pattern of land represents a variation of time and space in both the digital and physical world. Merged together, each landscape becomes an abstract vision of mending views, recreating a conceptual, unknown environment. These patchworks of sceneries taken from Google Earth express how diverse a single location on our planet can appear through a visual dispositive. These transfigurations were both digitally manmade by the apparatus used to capture the landscape, but also physically transformed by the global warming produced by human beings. Both changes depict the unpredictable development of landscape during our tumultuous time.
