Being A Stone(Simulant) questions the nature-culture relationship and philosophies of being whilst meditating upon recent radical shifts in human existence and experience. Encountering the world through digital interfaces, a process already in motion and accelerated by the 2020 global pandemic lockdown, the work combines dual versions of an object - its 2d image and its 3d model counterpart (captured using 3d scanning/photogrammetry), presented as one form to combine surface data and dimensions in a unique image that considers how we experience the materiality of an object in a virtual world.

In the united form through the process of transferring surface data from the real world to the artificial you will see information has been distorted or lost leading to incompleteness or inconsistency. I am interested in these imperfect and disrupted forms as it questions what we may lose moving from physical to non-physical space. 

The work also questions the nature of organic-artificial in the material sense as the stone itself is not an organic rock - during a lockdown walk in an urban forest I found what I thought was a natural stone , upon closer inspection it was in fact made out of concrete, a simulant, a product of culture as opposed to an object created by nature or natural processes. A fragment of industrial material somehow left to decay and gather moss on the forest floor and become part of its ecology.
