Mirror me

This series of work was created for Bevere Gallery's 2020 Graduate Exhibition. This project consisted of a collection of ceramic hand-built busts, ceramic sculpted feet and ceramic illustrated plates. 

‘Toeing the line’ is an extension of the artist’s graduate series 'If The Shoe Fits', and looks at the effect of the way we choose to speak about ourselves and one another. Each bust conveys an emotion, and every plate a short line which references their experience. In today’s society, there is growing awareness on the issues around language and the way particularly women are spoken about by others. This leads to new restrictions on what is deemed appropriate, and as a result, a mixture of responses to the development of acceptable language. Whether you advocate for this, or miss the 'good old days', all of us in one way or another toe the line.

This dance, entitled ‘Apart For Now’, might make you feel something, it might not. If it resonates with how you have been feeling recently, take comfort in being in this common place - a place of proximity. The dance has closeness at its core, with fleeting moments of meticulous attention to detail; these moments can feel weighted with emotion. Take comfort in knowing that distance is temporary and closeness comes in many forms. Notice too, that there are dynamic movements, which suggest a sense of striving towards something more meaningful. Take comfort in knowing that, although we may be apart for now, we are in this moment together.
