Pythagoras, the Greek philosopher, purportedly discovered the secret of harmony when he came across five blacksmiths hammering in a village. The five hammers were producing a wondrous collective sound. Yet, Pythagoras realized that only four of the five hammers were throwing off true harmony. That fifth hammer was a bit off. Pythagoras could not measure it; nor could he understand its discordant sound. Like many practitioners today, Pythagoras discarded that fifth, outlier hammer.

  
it is clear that the fifth hammer did not contribute beauty and magic by fitting in. Rather, it made a difference by standing out. It turns out that the fifth hammer was a misfit and the secret to the entire sound that piqued Pythagoras’ ear initially. The fifth hammer added grit and resonance to a system that would have been flaccid without it.

Because I use minimal tools and materials, the original plate (or drawing) is destroyed with the printing process, making each monotype a truly one of a kind piece.

The Fifth Hammer

This artwork belongs to a series of abstracted compositions I created using rudimentary shapes as a primary source for language. How lines intersect or cross paths, how circular patterns reflect infinity and timeless conversation (or lack thereof) and how the seemingly random isn't random at all.

Thermal Mapping is a look into the crisis of global warming. An mapping of how the core of our earth is following a path of extreme overheating and inevitable devastation.

This work is created using a variety of paintbrushes, pencils and markers. While this artwork is created with a computer, the technique is still very much traditionally based. By using a drawing tablet, I stay physically connected to my drawing surface, which allows for organic gestures to stay intact and free flowing. Through the remarkable advancements in technology, a digital medium allows for endless possibilities to experiment (and blend) with textures, shapes, color, layers and papers.

We have to learn to protect our environments, one step at a time. If we don't, we run the risk of exhausting all our natural resources. Half the fun of traveling is immersing in the pleasures of the surroundings, but if we're not careful all we'll have left to witness is barren deserts.

The Whip explores sexuality.  It discusses the idea of being in control or losing control. How willing are we to explore our own intimacies and to learn passionately about what it means to be a sexually driven species.

Hazy Shade of Winter is a discussion of the personal struggle in dealing with being diagnosed BiPolar late in life. It is a search for answers and also the intricate (and confusing) webs the brain can formulate on a day to day basis when taking the steps necessary for therapeutic healing.

In the face of climate change and witnessing how this is taking its toll on the food supply chain of the supermarkets, we have to educate ourselves on how the earth has always provided for us. By seeing the abundance that is readily available, we can start to see how saving our planet should be the number one goal.

Guess Where Wild Asparagus Grows

The Monarch Butterfly is a creature of whimsy and classic beauty. Their strength and resilience is nothing short of amazing as they (can) trek over 3000 miles a year to lay eggs in warm climates. The Monarch, however, is in grave danger of becoming extinct. Western monarchs have declined by more than 99 percent since the 1980s. Eastern monarchs have declined by an estimated 80 percent.

One way we can help to save the Monarch is by planting more Milkweed, for them to lay their eggs and for caterpillars to eat, and other nectar flowers for fuel to make their long journey.

We have to learn to protect our environments, one step at a time. If we don't, we run the risk of exhausting all our natural resources and all the wonderful (and necessary) creatures that inhabit the world.
