The Liu Shiming Art Foundation is announcing their first Open Call for the 2025 edition of the Screening Series. This year’s theme, “Everyday Heritage – Cultural Memory in Motion,” invites emerging filmmakers and video artists to submit moving image works that explore how culture, memory, and identity are carried, embodied, and transformed through the gestures of everyday life.

Selected works will be presented in two or three public screenings at the Liu Shiming Art Gallery & Foundation in Midtown Manhattan during Summer/Fall 2025, in tandem with the Gallery’s upcoming exhibition People Everyday, which features artworks by Hank Willis Thomas and Liu Shiming on May 27, 2025.

Film Open Call

The Liu Shiming Art Foundation is now accepting applications for a new round of Liu Shiming Artist Grants designed to support the work of visual artists during the first decade of their careers. Up to five grants will support the creation or completion of new projects.

  
“_In keeping with the creative practice of Liu Shiming, this round of Artist Grants will focus on projects that explore the interplay between traditional cultural or historical influence and contemporary artistic practice,”_ explains Fran Kaufman, Curatorial Director of Liu Shiming Art Gallery. Kaufman will head up the international selection panel of distinguished professionals representing a cross-section of the art world to review top applications.

  
Applicants will be evaluated based on several attributes, including but not limited to:

* Professional artistic background.
* Purpose of entry.
* Project’s connection to the legacy or cultural themes of this year’s Grants program.
* Originality and uniqueness of the applicant's artistic practice.

Selected artists will participate in Liu Shiming Art Foundation's future international programs and exhibition spaces to reach a wider audience. These projects may include but are not limited to participation in the following activities:

  
* $5,000 grant to support the creation or completion of new projects.
* Potential residency in China (details TBD). Grants will be disbursed in two payments, with $3,000 by January 15, 2026 and the remaining $2,000 upon completion of the proposed project.
* Potential future exhibition opportunities at the Liu Shiming Art Gallery in Manhattan, New York (details TBD).
* Access to the Liu Shiming Scholars and Artists network.
