Granted The Right To Be Granted

A sonic representation of Koumaria’s audio archive through a spatial sound installation. The original archived audio is manipulated to form a malleable soundscape, it is then dispersed through speaker drivers, horns translucent tubing, air valves and air splitters into different spaces throughout an Olive Factory. A bed of environmental sound conditions the space through various resonant machinery & metal housings. Sound proceeds through air valves and air splitters to singular tubes hung in space, the longer the length of tube, the more blurred the sonic material becomes. Each tube can be listened to individually, developing a fragmented listening experience. The archival material mainly exists as a digital database, fragments of the unheard is an experiential form of the past, which reorganises audio from previous pieces in the Olive Plant, and re-contextualises them to be experienced through space. Fragments Of The Unheard

A phonon is the quantum mechanical description of an elementary vibrational motion in which a lattice of atoms or molecules uniformly oscillates at a single frequency.  Nonlinear is a sonic articulation of acoustic and optical phonons, an out of phase or linear movement between atoms. A phonon represents an excited state in the quantum mechanical quantization of the modes of vibration in elastic structures of interacting particles. The installation consists of two latex spheres each containing a lavalier microphone, the spheres are situated between a speaker driver and applied pressure. Electronics apply different amounts of pressure to each sphere causing an amplification of the relationship between manipulated space, microphone, speaker and the surrounding acoustic environment. The pressure applied will determine the characteristics of feedback, creating linear and non linear phase patterns of sound through material and space. The spheres represent out-of-phase movements of l atoms in the lattice, one atom moving to the left, and its neighbour to the right This occurs if the lattice basis consists of two or more atoms.

Nonlinear

Acclimate is a temperature-reactive sound installation exploring the physical and psychological effects of noise on the human body. Four prepared oscillating fans are positioned in a cross formation; each fan coupled with a loudspeaker emitting pink noise to articulate its position in space. The fans act as sonic objects, generating their own sound as well as modulating the sounds from the loudspeakers through airflow regulation. Temperature sensors dictate the speed of each fan, which in turn, create fluctuations in air pressure at a molecular level. These subtle shifts in the air affect the way in which sound is propagated and spatially diffused; creating a complex listening experience that is different with every encounter. The piece acts as a metaphor for homeostasis, the human body’s ability to constantly regulate itself in response to changes in external conditions. Brighton Grand Parade, June 2017. Acclimate

SPUR is a virtual residency platform uniting international graduates working across digital mediums. Spanning workshops, collaboration, and mentorship, the residency program facilitates new methodologies for working collectively online.   Operating within the digital platform developed by Berlin-based Omsk Social Club, SPUR participants navigate their practice as newly formed pseudo personas. Through skill-sharing and virtual studio space, SPUR residents form an invaluable peer network as they embark on the early stages of their artistic careers.   SPUR “CORE” artists participate and drive the development of a compressive collective throughout the residency period. CORE artists attend weekly online sessions hosted by arts professionals from a wide range of backgrounds in which to grow and expand not only their personal practices but that of the SPUR.WORLD platform and resulting virtual exhibition and public programme.

SPUR.World

Pressure Gradients is a collection of new collaborative works by British sound artists Jordan Edge and Joshua Legallienne. Both artists have worked with the movement of air individually in their respective practices and have come together to further explore this mode of working. This exhibition is the result of an extended period of dialogue and research between the artists.  This new body of work is focused on the movement of air for the production of unamplified acoustic sound, producing audible noise through kinetic actions and material interaction. Pressure Gradients explores sustainable and unconventional methods of sound production using air as the primary medium. The project explores sonic reductionism; examining the perception of sound at a truly fundamental level: variations in air pressure. The works explore concepts of immateriality through their use of transparent and translucent materials; utilising giant latex balloons, silicone tubing, biodegradable plastic sheeting, glass horns, traditional Japanese tissue paper.  Edge and Legallienne are the first recipients of The Auxiliary’s Sonic Arts Emerging Artist Exhibition Award.
