This film was created in response to the 2017 Redwood Complex Fires in our area of California. Our community at the time, came together creatively to heal ourselves and our relationship to each other and to the land.

New Territory

In creating this piece I was focussed on the disruption, despair and anguish of war, territories, displacement and these concerns were poured into this piece. My heart is heavy. 

Edge of Darkness

 it is part of the Territories series, which explores what it means to own, occupy and inhabit that which was previously inhabited by other species, peoples and such. The colors I choose are blues because I am in a blue period which for me means peace

Invasion of the Blue Flowers

I am grappling with the idea of ownership, land, territory and how that has affected the world. I read Simon Winchester's book "Land, How the Hunger for Ownership Shaped the World". It is a fascinating read, and it illuminated many things for me, among them whose idea it was to expand west beyond the Mississippi. I think about our Native American population and also the people of the Middle East, including the Jews who historically dwelled there for centuries and the constant fighting. As with all of my work, these concerns get blended into my brain and I create something that expresses my deepest emotions.

Promised

I have been long thinking about the conflicts, the wars in Sudan, Syria, Afghanistan, Israel, Ukraine, and there are others. It all comes down to greed and hunger for control and power over the people, land, water and air we breathe. When all of that - the substance, the details of the wars gets processed by my mind and heart, I transmute it into works that express what I feel through color, line and form/shape.

These colors that are occupying my soul are the hues of blue, white, and earth tones, that signify land, air and water over which civilizations have fought and continue to fight.

I was caught up in the winter blues, thinking about how little I have used blue paint, especially ultramarine blue, the deep blue of the sea, since I moved away from the ocean side. And I thought about how much I love all things blue, and being in the wintertime, and it being cold outside, I was feeling a little blue and caught up in a million thoughts about azure blue seas, and land and territories, and I wanted to have peace in my heart. I was hoping that holding peace and thoughts of peace in my whole being that maybe if everyone who saw this started doing the same and sharing that idea, that maybe, just maybe that could reach out and radiate to the whole world and peace would become a reality and not just a wish. 

Sectional Blue

During a recent sojourn in Europe, removed from my usual artistic pursuits, I found myself engrossed not only in the rich tapestry of cultural experiences but also deeply affected by the ongoing conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine. As someone with ancestral ties to both regions, these global crises resonated profoundly within me, stirring a complex array of emotions as an artist, a woman, and a member of humanity. Away from my artistic tools, the inundation of tragic news stories added layers to my heightened emotional state. The futility and devastation of wars, driven by territorial disputes and deep-seated prejudices, perplex me. It seems incomprehensible that dialogue and diplomacy are not more fervently pursued to avert such senseless loss of life. "Between the Lines" serves as an expressive outlet— I seek to transform anguish into something visually captivating and, in doing so reflect the belief that art's transformative power is a requisite for our collective survival.

In this creation, I've intertwined cool blues with warm undertones to manifest tranquility amidst life's complexity. The geometric abstraction signifies structured memories, while fluid graphite lines dance across, symbolizing letting go and the freedom to move forward. 

  
I have been investigating the notions of land, peace, ownership and home. And with my series Abstracted Memories, also dealing with the past as it enters my present and informs my future. This piece is about saying goodbye to the past and opening doors to the present and being at peace. I painted over a multi colored canvas that had a strong foothold in my past. It didn't serve me to look at it, and the more I did, the angrier I got until one day I said "enough is enough, it is time to let go of this crazy episode linked to the past, right here and right now in the present".
