This video explores my father’s coming of age story and explores the effect of environment on identity and self discovery, originating from the quaint lumber town of Machias, Washington.

Inner Beauty is inspired by the artist’s mother’s coming of age story. It explores themes of identity, upbringing, and religion and the healing that comes from truly being seen.

Inner Beauty

Inspired by the celtic tradition of The Clootie Wells in Scotland or the Ragtime Tree in Ireland. Legend has it that a person would take a stripe of cloth from an ill person’s garment to take them to a holy well where they were prayed over and dipped in the water and then tied to a tree next to this holy sight. It is said as they fade so to the illness. The artist offers a sacred contemporary space through which by ritual we can share that which is covered, and bring them to the light in an effort for personal catharsis and communal sharing. 

  
We invite you to take a stripe of cloth and examine your own coverings with this exhibition and then write down something that rings true and tie it carefully to the Clootie Well installation.
