"Fragments" continues the series of digital works and represents the beginnings of the study of visual and identity defragmentation, a symbol and characteristic often found in the works of artist Laura Candet. 

Being a work made for the Royal Margerta Foundation of Romania through the "Young Talents" scholarships (2022), "Fragments" encapsulates the meticulous study for the Romanian traditional, for the nostalgia of the bygone cultural times.

„Hunting after fragments of myself” by Laura Candet is part of the series „Defragmentation”, a body of works related to the research of cultural identities in the eastern european traditional context. Being always close to these myths and traditions, the artists explores a personal defragmented space where tradition, social constructs, political and cultural values and collective trauma thrive together.

Applying the visual context of Romanian winter traditions, Laura Candet explores in the work "Contrejour in the woods" the relationship between light and shadow, the chromatic contrast of winter and also the traditional identity context placed in the painting by using the subject of goats in the new year, a Romanian tradition. 

The second work regarding this theme contributes to the overall discution on compozition and the relationship between light and dark.

From the artist's most recent artistic project, "Defragmentari", the painting "Defragmentation" represents the strong contrast between ritual and movement, between tradition and celebration, between myth and culture. Inspired by a continuous but defragmented movement of Romanian winter traditions, the painting both straddles themes of particular cultural importance in Eastern Europe but at the same time involves the contemporary visual context of the West, a wave that came over Eastern Europe predominantly after the 2000s in which the artist grew up.

"As in winter so in mind" is one of the artist's most recent digital works, exploring the relationship between tradition, myth and symbol in a contemporary society based on forgetting the past and embracing Western cultural waves. Seen from an Eastern European perspective, the myths and traditions that place our collective mentality in a form of mysticism and ritual retreat to make way for a Western world, a Western culture, through which we filter these ancient traditions.

  

As in winter so in mind

"Burning Stones" is one of the works in Laura Candet's 2021 digital series, inspired by a marble statue in the artist's local cemetery. Replacing the traces of time with a fiery, red chromatic, the artist transforms the concept of forgetting into a process of personal exploration, a devotion to what or who is forgotten and beyond.

"Envy" represents for the artist Laura Candet a portrait that started as a study, slowly becoming a free-standing work. 

The strong, mixed emotions evoked by the female character's gaze and the dynamic angles of the composition allow the viewer to contemplate the possible source. 

Even if the viewer is not directly included in the dynamics of the work, he or she is involved by creating a possible visual triangle viewer-character-source of emotions.

  

Envy

Using both the figurative and the abstract in her work, Laura Candet starts from the taboo concept of the scars caused by mental health. With a slight touch of irony of the subject, the artist bluishes to the extreme what should represent a fresh scar, becoming just an abstract band that crosses the whole hand, starting (or ending) at the wrist. 

This work captures the viewer through the stark contrast between the realistic and the unintelligible.
