A book, a photo, a memento: a stranger in a foreign country breaks through the isolation of the new place by placing something from his personal life nearby. But what if there was nothing? No picture, no book, no memento? Identity and memory are essential for our well-being. In addition to the known basic human needs, such as eating, drinking, sexuality and warmth, there are also less known needs, such as the need for identity. Anyone who has a working identity will not suspect that having an identity could be important. Identity is not what is described in the passport. If you lose a passport, you have not lost your identity. But what happens if you lose your identity?
The inhabitants of South Tyrol once had to choose: between home and identity. Either they had to become real Italians and smell their house. Or they were allowed to remain German-speaking South Tyroleans, but then had to leave their homes and move to a foreign place. After all ... they had a choice.
The Paratemporealis cycle is about losses and losing, about identity and the loss of identity. And yes, it’s a personal thing.
For the realization of the cycle the artist worked partly with historical photos, picture manipulation, and with artificial intelligence.
