pre / sense: 798 multidisciplinary residency project
798 Art District, in partnership with BOUNDED SPACE, invites applications for the 798 Multidisciplinary Residency Project, a residency and co-creation programme dedicated to the intersection of art, technology, music and other multidisciplinary fields.
The 2026 programme takes place under the theme “Pre / Sense: Miracles at the Threshold”. It explores how art, music and science can move beyond established systems of knowledge and open new ways of perceiving the unknown.
Selected artists will undertake a full-time residency at the 798 Multidisciplinary Base in Beijing from mid-October to mid-December 2026. Participants will have access to studio facilities, creative equipment, materials, technical expertise and curatorial and production support.
The programme concludes with a public presentation of the resulting works across indoor and outdoor venues in the 798 Art District. Works will make their global debut as part of the district’s New Year’s Eve programme, beginning on 20 December 2026.
The programme welcomes proposals for technology and music installations, public art, outdoor interactive installations, audiovisual art, immersive sound art, bio art, new-material experiments, live performances and related interdisciplinary practices.
Theme
Pre / Sense
Humanity understands the world through systems of knowledge, experience, language and classification. However, when we rely too heavily on established definitions and certainties, the unknown can become excluded from how we perceive reality.
Drawing on Jacques Lacan’s concept of “the Real”, Pre / Sense considers what exists beyond established systems of language and knowledge. The programme explores how art, music and science can challenge familiar modes of perception and reveal new values, relationships and possibilities.
Applicants are invited to approach uncertainty with openness and propose work that explores the undefined territories emerging at the intersection of art, music, science and technology.
