SCULPTURE SPACE, located in Utica, New York invites artists whose focus is sculpture to apply for a two-month residency between February and November 2024. Offering a 5,500 square foot shared studio with specialized equipment in addition to six semi-private studios. On-site Studio Manager provides ongoing assistance and technical expertise; Executive Director is available to assist with any other special requirements. Basic understanding and communication skills in English are necessary.
Five to six artists are in residence during four two-month cohorts (February/March, April/May, July/August, and October/November) artists are expected to stay for the full two months. Housing is provided a block away in a renovated multi-level home with private bedrooms, washer/dryer, TV, internet, shared living space and kitchen.
Artists are responsible for materials, specialized tools and food. Since 1976, Sculpture Space has helped to support the careers and studio practice of over 600 national and international artists from around the world. This residency fosters a collaborative environment in the studio and the communal aspects of the residence create meaningful dialogue, exchange of ideas, creative experimentation, and personal and professional connections.
In addition to our annual fundraiser in September, the public is invited to Open Studio receptions (one held during each cohort session). As desired, artists and arts professionals, curators, and writers are invited to the studio for informal visits. Accepted artists are selected by a Review Committee. The primary criteria for selection are on quality, originality, and potential of the work presented and the proposed project. Dependent on funding, financial aid may be made available.
