Overview

The Canton of Bern promotes qualitatively convincing cultural projects in all fields. It supports professional cultural workers with scholarships and contributions. In addition, the Canton of Berne awards prizes for outstanding cultural achievements.

As a rule, the Canton of Berne supports cultural projects in a complementary manner (supplementary) to contributions from other public funding agencies. Cultural practitioners and cultural organisers can submit applications for project grants on an ongoing basis. At the same time, they must submit an application to a Bernese municipality. This can be the municipality of residence of the cultural workers involved, the municipality where the cultural association concerned is located or the municipality where the event is to take place.

In certain areas, the Canton of Berne sets priorities in its cultural promotion and supports cultural creation independently of the participation of municipalities and other public funding agencies. These priorities include, for example, the promotion of film in Berne, the promotion of cultural education in schools and the support of artists in their artistic careers. The canton can also provide impetus for developments in Bern's cultural life with temporary funding accents. The grants are awarded by means of a call for proposals.

Bernese artists can regularly apply for cantonal scholarships and contributions to studio residencies. Grants are awarded on the recommendation of the cantonal cultural commissions and independently of contributions from other funding agencies. In addition, the Canton of Berne awards prizes for outstanding cultural achievements. In doing so, it is also advised by the cultural commissions. No applications are possible for awards.

Every year, the Canton of Berne purchases works by visual artists from the canton. In doing so, it not only supports the artists in their current work, but has also been safeguarding the cultural memory of Bernese art for a good 100 years with the cantonal art collection.

The Cantonal Cultural Promotion Office offers scholarships for visual arts, photography and architecture for professional artists and cultural mediators in the respective fields.

The grants enable intensive work on an artistic project. The cultural workers are given the opportunity

Realise extraordinary works or projects. To carry out unique research, studies or projects within the framework of their work. To consistently pursue and further develop their artistic or art mediating work. Concepts involving the discourse between visual arts, photography, architecture, works in public space as well as performances are also possible.
