crosstown arts residency program

The multidisciplinary artist residency program at Crosstown Arts in Memphis, TN, offers residencies for visiting and Memphis-based artists and curators working in any creative discipline including visual and performing artists, musicians, filmmakers, and writers in all genres. Residencies include a private studio workspace, free access to Shared Art Making during the residency session and meals/food stipends. Live/work residencies also include a private living space. All housing has kitchen, laundry and living spaces some of which is shared. A family housing option is available as well as accessible housing for differently abled residents. All residencies are offered at no cost to participants, who are responsible to cover their own studio materials and travel expenses to and from Memphis. For 2023, Crosstown Arts is accepting applications for spring (three months), summer (two 21-day sessions), and fall (three months). One ten-month, studio-only, visual arts residency per year is also available. Residents must be 21 years old by the time of the residency. There are no specific project requirements for accepted residents who are encouraged to experiment and explore new ideas or further develop current work. Residents are given a membership, for the duration of their residency, to Crosstown Arts’ on-site shared art making workspace with a range of analog and digital fabrication and production resources. All residents are asked to participate in a limited number of public engagement activities (i.e. informal artist talks, open studio events) while in residency. Founded in 2010, Crosstown Arts (501c3) managed the renovation of the Crosstown Concourse building, a one-million-square-foot former Sears distribution warehouse. The building is now home to Crosstown Arts’ contemporary art center that includes the residency program, multiple galleries, large-scale exhibition/installation spaces, a screening room, a listening room for live music and a 417-seat black box performing arts theater.
