Morphogenesis: A Visual Descent #54

Ode to the legendary counterpart creature of Japanese folklore, this composition serves as a communication from a bygone era adapted to our contemporary reality, reflecting our ever-evolving lifestyles and thoughts, much like the enduring myths that envelop us.

With a commitment to precision, I aimed to center my efforts on the distinctive attributes of the Tengu: the fan, the martial arts concept, and the resulting discipline ingrained in ancestral techniques passed down through generations.

In its formal manifestation, TenGü emerges as a utilitarian and polymorphic creation. Crafted with the intention of minimizing its spatial footprint in our interiors, TenGü ideally finds its place next to expansive windows. When in use, its design facilitates an emotional interaction with the external environment, akin to a Tengu observing from a mountain summit. The user of TenGü assumes the role of the legendary creature honing skills while maintaining vigilant awareness of the surroundings.

Constructed with a robust white oak frame adorned with brass and gold leaf, TenGü integrates traditional cabinet-making techniques involving bending and assembly. The fan-shaped top features a feather pattern in straw marquetry, reminiscent of wings, and incorporates the Tengu feather fan.

The transformation of this furniture piece is initiated by the user, who rotates the fan from a vertical to a horizontal position through a rotating mechanism. A screw system secures the tray during this transformative moment, echoing a ritualistic gesture akin to martial artists preparing for training. At the conclusion of the "training," the tray gracefully returns to its original position, marking the conclusion of the practice.

Es ist ein Spiel und gerade das ist das Faszinierende daran: mit neugieriger Spannung hervorzukitzeln, was in anderen Bereichen des Lebens mitunter narzisstische Wunden hervorruft. Ein jeder sieht, was er sieht, was eine andere mitunter so gar nicht sehen kann, weil er oder sie eine andere Perspektive, ein anderes Auge, ein anderes Gehirn, ein anderes nicht sprachbar zu machendes ICH hat oder ist. Sie merken, es wird sprachlich nicht leicht, aber wenn Sie sich bemühen, mir zu folgen, wird Ihr Hirn mit all seinen Helferlein da sein Eigenes mitmachen, da bin ich ganz zuversichtlich.

Lassen Sie uns also gemeinsam auf den Dachboden unserer Fantasie klettern, entdecken und erforschen, was unter Spinnweben und Staubschichten längst vergessen geglaubt war. Oder aber annähern an das, was wir noch nicht wissen oder was sich in unsprachlicher Ahnung sinnesspezifisch den Weg in schillernde Sprechblasen unserer Assoziationsketten sucht. Erinnerungen an Erfahrungen, an Menschen und Momente, die sich auf unsere innere Netzhaut brennen, Augenblicke, die ein Außen simulieren. Vielleicht haben Sie ja auch Ihren Keller durchsucht und nichts gefunden? Vielleicht finden wir eher dort, wo wir nichts vermuten? Mimesis

The human brain can be related to television or AI as it continuously consumes and analyzes data daily. Memories are stored within our minds, much like the photographs in an album. Certain music can evoke specific moments or memories from our lives, while video games can elicit feelings of happiness and excitement. Many individuals contemplate existential questions of their “realness” within reality and ponder the very nature of reality itself. Some question whether we are merely robots with distinct genetic internal wiring or if we are controlled by a higher power, existing as souls within physical bodies.

  
As time progresses, old traditions and technologies fade, much like the desire for the latest iPhone model. The outdated ones are eventually forgotten and deemed “non-functional,” similar to the natural cycle of human life. There is a fear that one day, everything in our lives will be controlled by a data source and artificial intelligence, resulting in a false reality. Just as we program computers and other electronic devices for specific purposes, we, too, are assigned a purpose and a path. However, true freedom can only be attained by breaking free from this simulation. 

  

Simulated Minds 

The duende is not in the throat; the duende climbs up inside you, from the soles of the feet. It is not a question of ability, but of true, living style, of the most ancient culture, of spontaneous creation. 

The duende's arrival always means a radical change in forms. It brings to old planes unknown feelings of freshness, with the quality of something newly created, like a miracle, and it produces an almost religious enthusiasm.

Creation was fractured, the hands of God and man were separated by the cataclysm. But they were reunited by the new world: by the branches, the flowers and the forest. These new forms symbolize creation from the point of view of conscious Nature.

_"Ancient Egyptians believed that a man's memory was tied more to the things he had written than to the monuments he had erected. Phoenicians and Greeks knew how to demonstrate this belief. Every block of historical traces we learn to unfold linguistic processes and evolution are sublimated within every medium I used to perfom Alef."_

This sculpture is inspired by the evolutionary process behind the birth of the letter A.

Phoenicials traced the head of the ox, which they pronounced 'Alef'.

With the Greeks, Alef became written, but in 'Alpha', with another well-known sign and nowadays, in the alphabet we all know, we use and write A letter as it is the first one of the word Alef..
