'The other' reflects on ideas of identity, belonging and acceptance. The figures head towards the same direction, only two of the figures face an opposite way hinting on what it means to be different. The work also questions what it means to have different views that opposes the majority. What does it mean to be the minority being swept within the majority? 

The other

The obscure nature of a pandemic reflects upon the situation of Covid-19 in Berlin, Germany. The work documents the behaviour of society and its approach to the mandatory wearing of masks. Kim intertwines her humour in this observation as each individual in the artwork wears their mask differently, some getting away with their mouth covered by their clothing. The dark long winter is depicted through her use of colours. Additionally, in the background reveals businesses closing down, posters indicating a pickup and delivery service with discounts when ordered in store. Shutters rolled down along with a travel center thanking the community for being together the last 21 years. The signature orange trash can of Berlin overflows with take-away boxes. This references the lockdown that closed all restaurants and cafes with only take-out options available, leading to an increased number of trash on the streets of Berlin.

‘Patching Self’, shines light onto the tiny thread of confidence amongst our growing insecurities as women. It acknowledges fear, flaws and longing for reassurance, but more-so focuses on the courage taken to be vulnerable. The subject poses in confidence at first glance, but her wary eyes give herself away with a sense of insecurity. The singular white line acts as the subconscious, the repressed emotion that is so tightly concealed and buried within self.
