This project is a collection of 4 paintings created while living in a studio on Potsdamer Strasse in the fall of 2011. These are mixed media paintings incorporating pigmented inkjet prints and watercolor painting.

While I was working on this piece I was thinking about  orientation videos produced by a secretive organization. This idea brought me to the title, Simulacra, inspired by the writing of French philospher Jean Baudrillard. 

The simulacra that Baudrillard refers to are the significations and symbolism of culture and media that construct perceived reality, the acquired understanding by which our lives and shared existence is rendered legible; Baudrillard believed that society has become so saturated with these simulacra and our lives so saturated with the constructs of society that all meaning was being rendered meaningless by being infinitely mutable.

Simulacra

'Ruminants' is a series of portraits and scenes from a fleshy intestinal inspired concept of hell. The work in this series uses a combination of mediums; drawing, digital illustration, darkroom photo developing and painting.

A ruminant is any animal that digests its food in two steps, first by eating the raw material and regurgitating a semi-digested form known as cud, then eating (chewing) the cud, a process called ruminating. 

The verb to ruminate has been extended metaphorically to mean to thoughtfully ponder or to meditate on some topic. Similarly, ideas may be chewed on or digested. Chew the (one's) cud is to reflect or meditate.

'In the Darkest Places' is a series of photomontage pieces. This work is composed from a mixture of disparate elements; photographs of flowers, pornography and fashion advertising. What we see is not always what we imagine it to be. Especially true in an era of digital media which allows history to be re-written and re-created and truth is no longer an absolute.
