Sylvan Landscapes is a series of [abstract photographs](https://andrewprokos.com/photos/abstract/) of tall trees and woodland landscapes. The series is conceptual in nature as the scenes are pre-visualized and the images are captured specifically for use in this series. I first scout the locations specifically for the type of tree canopies I am looking for. I then capture the landscape by shooting numerous images which are merged to produce a very detailed [high-definition images](https://andrewprokos.com) serving as the basis for each landscape. This also allows me to produce [large scale fine art prints](https://andrewprokos.com/fine-art-prints/) from the series.

Continuing the process, the single image is reflected in a process that reveals the intriguing hidden patterns of nature. The final artwork conveys a sense of mystery derived from the power and beauty inherent in the natural world. Sylvan Landscapes

Forum Romanum is a reinterpretation of a series photographed in Italy in 2004. The series was originally presented as separate images of the Roman Forum and Palatine and Capitoline Hills. The current series was formulated in stages after experimenting with ideas on how to present the images in a more compelling way.

I started by toning the images in a low contrast platinum tint. I used to achieve this sort of tone by researching toning formulas in old photographic manuals and hand mixing the formulas using dry chemicals I imported from Quebec. These days the toning is all done digitally, and the environmental and health risks associated with handling chemicals can thankfully be avoided.

After the color palette had been established, I worked on tilt-shift effects to add a sense of depth and focus. The series was not captured using a large format camera, however technology now offers us the ability to mimic this look dating back to the early stages of photography.

Importantly, the early renditions of these images had retouched out the groups of tourists parading through the ruins. In this reinterpretation I decided to leave them in to provide a sense of scale, and to add a hint of humor to the images.



Forum Romanum

Niemeyer’s Brasilia is a series of photos conceived when I was visiting Brasilia for the first time in 2012. I was fascinated by Brasilia, which seems futuristic and trapped in time. The entire city was shaped by the works of architect [Oscar Niemeyer](https://andrewprokos.com/tags/oscar-niemeyer-architecture/), whose presence is felt in every corner of the city, from the spectacular [Cathedral of Brasilia](https://andrewprokos.com/photos/brazil/brasilia/) to the more intimate chapels and monuments. Niemeyer had unprecedented influence over the design of the city from its beginnings until his death in 2012, a span that lasted over 50 years. There is no other place in the world where one architect had so much influence, which explains my fascination with his buildings.

Niemeyer’s Brasilia has won numerous awards, including 1st Place / People’s Choice at the Prix de la Photographie, a Silver Medal in Night Photography at the International Photography Awards, and was selected by an international jury for Latin American Fotografia 3. The series was included in Andrew’s exhibition Brazil: Night & Day – Photographs by Andrew Prokos at Banco do Brasil in New York and was also exhibited later the same year at the Consulate General of Brazil in New York. The series has been published in newspapers and magazines around the world in 14 countries and 8 languages.

New York Cityscapes - Color

New large format and long-exposure cityscapes from Dubai by fine art and architectural photographer Andrew Prokos. Long exposure times of up to ten minutes were employed to capture the images, as well as stitching of ultra high-resolution 102 megapixel images. Large-scale fine art prints of these Dubai photos are available up to 200 inches in size framed in various styles.

Dubai Cityscapes

The Architecture of Amusement is an ongoing project which captures the fascinating architectural elements present in American amusement parks. It focuses on the highly abstracted shapes and garish colors present in the amusement park environment, including rollercoaster tracks, rides, concession stands, and the simulacrum architecture used to create the atmosphere of fun. The Architecture of Amusement has been published in Marie Claire Italia and in the Style magazine of Corriere della Sera, Italy.

The Architecture of Amusement

Gehry’s Children is a series I completed while on location in Seattle. I have always been fascinated by the way Frank Gehry incorporates materiality into his buildings, something which he pioneered as an architect. He is not only a master at playing with forms, but he also gives us manifold textures and colors…from titanium, polished steel, iridescent glass and molded plastic.

This series is a study in geometry and texture. My intent is to bring the viewer closer to the building and give them access to another way of seeing it. For me this is one of photography’s main roles, to present the subject in a new way that the viewer may not have perceived before. The viewer may or may not ever see this building in person, so it is photos that will form their perception of it.

Gehry’s Children has won numerous awards, including Silver Medals at the International Photography Awards, the Prix de la Photographie, and the London International Creative Competition. The series was recently exhibited at 21_21 DesignSight museum in Tokyo as part of the exhibition Architect Frank Gehry – I Have An Idea.

The concept for Night & Day is rooted in the multiple panoramic film exposures I was shooting on location in the mid-2000’s. I would typically start shooting during the day and stay through sunset, dusk, and night in each location. In looking at my archive as a whole I began to imagine layering the exposures to form a seamless transition between the images. High-resolution film scans were first used, and eventually I transitioned to digital capture. The earlier film creations are composed of only three panoramic exposures, while later entries are composed of numerous digital exposures. In that sense the series traced not only the transition from day to night, but also the transition from one capture technology to another.

Night & Day has been awarded numerous times, including 1st Place / People’s Choice at the Prix de la Photographie, Jury selection at the prestigious American Photography competition, and Silver Medal at the Neutral Density Photo Awards.

Night & Day

Inverted New York is an ongoing series which presents commonplace settings in an atypical way through the use of negative imagery. I first started experimenting with negative imagery some twenty years ago, before digital methods of reproduction existed. For this series I decided to focus on stark monochrome inversions. The series re-introduces us to well known places such as the Statue of Liberty, which when stripped of their color and inverted become alien territory.
