"Reflections" is a weave of two identical prints of a photograph that are cut into stripes and bands of mirror foil. The destruction and re-combination of the picture alienates the original image, it treats the basics of contemporary photography, the pixel as image generator and the print as its materialization in a playful way. The manual manipulation results in a unique object with a three dimensional surface that offers permanently different versions according to the viewer's changing perspective.

Reflections

This installation was created for the group exhibition "Widerschein" in the former court prison (Gefängnis am Amtsgericht) in Köpenick, Berlin during the Day of Open Monuments (Tag des offenen Denkmals) on Sept. 12. 
I decided to transform the portrait of Johannes Stelling, former SPD-Reichstags MoP and one of the first prominent victims of the early Nazi terror in June 1933, known as "Köpenicker Blutwoche", and most likely killed in the rooms of this very prison, by cutting the image into vertical strips that are being torn apart by a fan while moving in a circle. The image haunts like a ghosts through the staircase of the empty building and is, barely being noticed as a face for a glimpse, being distorted again and again by the wind of the fan. 
In a way the installation depicts our rituals of memorial days and ceremonies in which victims of terror (mostly as a whole) are being remembered for a second just to vanish into the abyss of oblivion the the moment after, whereas we remember the perpetrator's names and faces very well.

Portrait Johannes Stelling

This installation is part of Kunstlabor 2, an initiative of Muca Munich - museum of urban and contemporary art. It is set in the former health center (Gesundheitshaus) in the center of Munich, Germany.
Base for this installation are two photographs that are printed in 6.3 x 4.7 m each, cut into stripes and pinned on the walls and ceiling. The shift in the pin points of each paper lane creates a movement of waves that reminds underwater worlds of a futuristic version of a limestone cave.
