The History of Black Hair series explores the transformation black hair has undergone throughout history and its main influencers. Black hair was seen as a negative with its "wool" like features, whilst white beauty standards disallowed black women to feel comfortable with their own hair to the point where we would use chemicals and/or straightening agents to rid ourselves of something that was a part of our black aesthetics. Throughout the years influential black women have broken away from the social norms and allowed others to follow suit and go against societies ideology on black hair that has gone to shape our hair culture today.
