Blinding Light is a series of mixed media works on paper created during the spring and summer of 2016.
My images are often birthed out of an urgent personal need for expression and consolation. Color is often thought synonymous with hope and excitement. Yet this innocent joy can, after a point become destructive. Our desire for immediate gratification and comfort can cause us to check out.
By what means do we reconcile our need for personal pleasure with a greater sense of responsibility?
Blinding Light was driven by a desire to express and understand the complex map of human emotions, tendencies and desires we all experience. To consider the multiplitude of visual languages and codes we continue to invent and elaborate upon in order to cope with and understand ourselves. Colour is possibly the most universal and transcendent of these.
The way colour is combined can express the purity of love, joy or grief; the overwhelming nature of anxiety, to the perniciousness of control we increasingly crave. Or possibly a great many of these things simultaneously.
